Zack Snyder Header

Even though the yet untitled Man of Steel sequel, which we still are referring to as Batman vs. Superman, has had its release date pushed back to 2016, the film is still on schedule to start shooting this year. Fans are eagerly awaiting any concrete information with the plot and of course we’re all holding our breath in anticipation of seeing the new Batman costume design.

While out promoting 300: Rise of an Empire, the latest film the fan-dividing Zack Snyder has produced, The LA Times got the director to open up a bit about what we should expect to see with Batman vs. Superman, including a tease about the film’s plot, casting, and geeking out over the costumes.

Of course we’re all excited to hear how the worlds of Superman and Batman will be merged in the film, and what comic book source material may be utilized. To that, Snyder noted:

[The movie] literally takes the Man of Steel and Batman universes and explodes them. You’re not as tied to the mythology. In Man of Steel, we had to create an origin story, a mythology, and there’s a lot of energy into that, which we love doing. Don’t get me wrong. But when you think about how fun it is too “” now that you’ve got these characters “” to now let “˜em loose. That’s fun!

While a bit vague, the takeaway here is that Snyder doesn’t appear to be directly pulling from any previously established source material or direct storylines to help shape Batman vs. Superman and that they’ll be creating their own universe for the World’s Finest to inhabit. This is especially interesting since when the film was officially announced at Comic-Con in San Diego last year, they used quotes from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. Surely there will be little hints and nods in the picture, but we shouldn’t expect any tangible story we’ve read before to make it to the screen.

Snyder also geeked out while doing some testing with the new Batman and Superman costumes:

You know, Superman and Batman in the movies have never existed in the same frame together. So it’s an interesting historical thing. We were just testing the suits, right? The new Batsuit and the Superman suit. It wasn’t even with the actors, right? It was just to see “˜em. I was standing there, they were standing next to each other. And I was like, “Guys, someone take a picture! This has never happened before.” We slightly dork out. Like, “Are you kidding me?!”

Say what you will about Snyder’s finished film projects, but it’s at least nice to see someone so energetic and passionate about the films and material they are working on.

Lastly, Snyder had a few words to say about the recent casting choices – Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor – that have truly divided fans:

There are two ways to think about it. We know the material. Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material. So, we’re casting according to what’s happening in the script. And we’re hoping that leads to enough originality, enough perspective on what we’re doing that you get something fresh and exciting. I understand the canon. I’m not crazy. I know what these characters need from a mythological standpoint.

We know that Snyder is an avid comic book reader, so it should go to say that at least in his mind he is making the right choices for these roles and what the script calls for. This is the most challenging thing that we’re faced with at the moment, this notion of waiting and seeing. Sure, you can have a gut reaction upon hearing the names, but it is really going to come down to letting the material and the performances speak for themselves. Hopefully, with the filming starting up soon, we’ll get at least a small taste of what is to come, and put some of our worries to rest or at least provide some actual fuel to base internet rage on depending on your take.

Batman vs. Superman is currently scheduled to open May 6, 2016.
