Skullkickers #30 (Image Comics – $3.99) There’s a bit of good news/bad news going on with Skullkickers. The good news is that Skullkickers #30 is another Tavern Tales issues. These are special one-shots that are usually released between story arcs and feature a bunch of creators joining the regular creative team of Jim Zub and Edwin Huang to tell a bunch of random stories. These issues are always a good chance for new readers to give the series a shot and see what Skullkickers is all about. The bad news is that this is maybe the last Tavern Tales issue as the series is going to wrap up after the next story arc, and that makes me sad. Skullkickers has been a great take on role playing and fantasy tropes, and though I may be sad to see this series go, I’ll already be looking forward to what the team works on next.
Batman #34 (DC Comics – $3.99) I probably don’t need to tell you to buy Batman since it’s one of the top selling comics every month, but sometimes I need to tell myself to buy it. I’ve been waiting for the most recent storyline of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series, Zero Year, to get collected so I can just read it all at once, so I’m not buying Batman every month. However, no that Zero Year has wrapped up, Capullo is taking a month off, and Snyder has written a fill in issue that ties into Batman Eternal, which I am reading. So this one has me interested for the story, but it also has me interested because of the artist filling in for Capullo. Matteo Scalera, who is do amazing work on Image Comics Black Science provides the art for this issue, and I’m intrigued to see what he does with Batman. I hope he doesn’t get pulled away to work on Batman forever, because Black Science is awesome, but I suppose I’ll allow him to do something different every once in a while.
G.I. Joe Silent Interlude 30th Anniversary Edition Hardcover (IDW Publishing – $19.99) IDW presents a special edition of one of the most homage comics of all time with a special edition of G.I. Joe #21. This is the famous “silent” issue of G.I. Joe, featuring Snake Eyes sneaking into a COBRA stronghold to rescue Scarlet. It’s fairly standard Joe stuff, but the way it was told was a wake-up call to a generation of kids who had never seen anything like it. It’s also the issue most responsible for making Snake Eyes the breakout star of the G.I. Joe franchise, it was the first appearance of Storm Shadow, and continues to live on as one of the greatest single issues ever made. Now, 20 bucks for just the issue may be a bit on the pricey side, even considering that you get re-mastered art on the whole issue as well as plenty of behind the scenes info about the making of the book, but I’m sure Joe fans are drooling over this.
