We learned back in May that Gary Whitta was writing the screenplay for a Star Wars spin-off film to be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).
Now, the writer has revealed that he’s moved on to another project.
Whitta posted to his Twitter account yesterday that he was now working on Starlight, Fox’s big-screen adaptation of the Mark Millar comic book miniseries.
My year of work in a galaxy far, far away is done! I’m onto my next project, adapting @mrmarkmillar‘s STARLIGHT for 20th Century Fox!
A replacement writer(s) will likely need to be hired, as Whitta had only completed a first draft of the script, according to THR.
THR quoted Whitta as saying:
“The year I spent working with Lucasfilm on this Star Wars film has been by far the most rewarding period of my entire career. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m deeply grateful to have had the rare opportunity to contribute to a new chapter in its ongoing cinematic legacy. The film is going to be amazing.”
No word yet on who will come on to write the film, which is rumored to be centered on Han Solo.
Edwards’ standalone Star Wars film is scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.
As for Starlight, the news broke in September 2014 that Whitta had signed on to write the screenplay for Millar’s Image Comics scifi comic book miniseries. Check out our review of Starlight #1 from March 2014 when the comic was first released.
