While the Deadpool portion of Fox’s panel might have blown the roof off of San Diego Comic-Con 2015’s Hall H, it was X-Men: Apocalypse that brought the biggest lineup of stars.
The panel featured director Bryan Singer, Even Peters (Quicksilver), Lucas Till (Havoc), Lana Condor (Jubilee), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor Xavier), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey/Phoenix), Oscar Isaac (Apocalypse), Olivia Munn (Psylocke), Ben Hardy (Angel), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and screenwriter Simon Kinberg.
The panel kicked off with a video showcasing the journey of the franchise, which included Hugh Jackman auditioning for the iconic role of Wolverine that made him into the actor he is known for today. Jackman was present for the video and commented on his age, since he didn’t know about the audition tapes until just recently, saying “Old Man Logan.” Jackman then confirms that his next Wolverine movie, once again directed by The Wolverine director James Mangold, will be his last time putting on the claws.
Singer says Apocalypse takes place ten years after Days of Future Past, in 1983 when the public has accepted mutants because of Raven’s heroism. But there are some places who do not accept the mutants.
McAvoy says it’s great to be bald because now Patrick Stewart “doesn’t got shit on him.”
Lawrence says that in the film she will be Raven, because her character doesn’t want to be the face of a world that did not exist.
Fassbender says that Magneto hung up his cape and his evil ways, but is drawn back in by Apocalypse. He added his motives are justifiable, but his methods are questionable.The humanity in him is that he wants things, and what we are seeing is someone who is being developed by previous experiences in his life.
Isaac says Apocalypse wants to make a world in his vision since he has been in slumber. He goes to Psylocke, Storm, Angel, and Magneto to create new followers to create his vision. This could be seen as his four horsemen of the apocalypse.
Till comments that he has been practicing the Dragon Ball Z Kamehameha wave since he was six. Havoc’s energy wave will have been perfected.
Condor says Jubilee is the cool girl she could never be with a sick yellow jacket.
Smit-McPhee says Nightcrawler finds himself and has a great stance in his faith.
Sheridan says that the younger generation of actors gets to explore these mutants in a way that was never done in the last film.
Turner said she had a lot of responsibility, and had to live up to Famke Janssen’s performances as the Jean Grey/Phoenix character. For Turner it was exciting to find out how her character would become the most powerful mutant.
Hoult couldn’t speak because he was so psyched about the Deadpool trailer.
McAvoy could never see his character as Professor X, but always as Patrick Stewart. He just tried to make him better, which got a good laugh from the audience.
Munn used to cover this and said it felt like the mothership called her home. She felt excited to put on the suit and do the sword training.
Hardy said he had serious badass wings.
Shipp’s experience is, as she describes, epic. But her character doesn’t know where she is, and she is finding her way, so she looks to Apocalypse as her guide.
