At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, South Park celebrated its upcoming 20th season by debuting a new logo, resembling a Super Bowl logo, hosting a South Park 20 experience for all 4 days of the Con, and releasing a hilarious “We’ve Been There” video.
Watch the “We’ve Been There” video and some photos from the Con here below.
If I asked you for a list of television shows that have carried on two decades’ worth of entertainment while someone constantly catching on the cultural zeitgeist, how many of you would really think of South Park? Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the cartoon debuted in the mid-90s on Comedy Central, and quickly became a hit amongst my high school crowd for its crude obnoxious humor and politically incorrect takes on… everything. Highlights (or lowlights depending on your take) included Jesus fighting Satan, Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo, and Chef’s chocolate salty ball. Somehow, someway, the show evolved; its quick-to-produce animation allowed the creators to stay extremely topical, and capture the spotlight of whatever the hot issues were in America, cleverly disguised as issues dealt with by a group of kids in grade school.
The clip shows a dad watching South Park with his baby girl, and then shows the girl growing up constantly surrounded by South Park on TV, toys, stickers, etc. On a personal level, my TimeHop this morning showed a photo of my then not-yet 1-year-old daughter staring hypnotically up at the television… yep, South Park was on.
To commemorate the occasion, Comedy Central has a slew of events planned over the next few months.
South Park‘s 20th season premiere is September 14, 2016, at 10:00pm ET on Comedy Central.
