Sony’s TriStar Pictures will be help bring The Silver Chair, the next installment in The Chronicles of Narnia film franchise, to the big screen, along with The Mark Gordon Company, The C.S. Lewis Company, and Entertainment One (eOne).
It was revealed back in January that The Mark Gordon Company and The C.S. Lewis Company were jointly developing The Silver Chair, which will reboot the film franchise and bring on a entirely new creative team.
The series, which is based on the The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis, was first adapted for the big screen by Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures with 2005’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and its direct sequel 2008’s Prince Caspian, both of which were directed by Andrew Adamson. The franchise then moved over to Twentieth Century Fox for distribution for 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, directed by Michael Apted.
Walden Media’s contract with the C.S. Lewis estate expired in 2011, and in 2013, The C.S. Lewis Company announced its new partnership with The Mark Gordon Company, with plans to reboot the film franchise with The Silver Chair.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland) will write the upcoming adaptation, with Mark Gordon, C.S. Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham, Vincent Sieber, and Melvin Adams serving as producers. TriStar Pictures, eOne, and The Mark Gordon Company will finance The Silver Chair, with Sony and eOne distributing.
Published in the 1950s, there are seven books that make up Lewis’ Narnia fantasy series, with 1950’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe emerging as the most popular of the bunch. Wardrobe focused on the Pevensie children, four British evacuees who are transported via the title wardrobe to the magical world of Narnia, where they joined the lion Aslan’s fight against the evil White Witch. In Prince Caspian, the children are summoned back to Narnia by the title Prince to help save the land they once knew. Dawn Treader introduces the children’s annoying cousin Eustace Scrubb, who inadvertently finds himself back in Narnia with only Edmund and Lucy Pevensie along for the adventure to once again help Caspian. In The Silver Chair, at the request of Aslan, Eustace returns to Narnia bringing along his classmate Jill, a new character, to help locate Caspian’s missing son, Prince Rilian.
The new film is said to be in pre-production right now, and since it’s supposed to reboot the film universe, we can’t assume that actor Liam Neeson will be back to voice Aslan as he did for the previous three movies. Although, in my opinion, it wouldn’t hurt to get him back, since he did such a fantastic job previously. Plus, the character Aslan is the only one to appear in all seven books, so it wouldn’t hurt to have Neeson be the common thread that ties all the films together somehow.
