Han Solo’s ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Will Have Heist Or Western Feel

In the weeks leading up to the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we will probably hear a lot more about the other spinoffs that take place within the same universe. While Disney and Lucasfilm had planned on alternating between the saga films and spinoffs every year, the only other spinoff what we know about is that of the untitled Han Solo film that is set to begin production early next year.

The film will focus on a younger Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) in the years before we first met them in the original Star Wars trilogy. While there isn’t a definitive plot synopsis, producer Kathleen Kennedy dropped a few hints that tell us more about the film’s tone. According to her, the spinoff will have a heist or western type feel to it. More on the story below.

Kennedy talked about the young Han Solo movie’s tone to Variety. Here’s what she told the Hollywood trade:

“This moves closer to a heist or Western type feel. We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

It would make sense that we would see Han Solo in a space-age western movie. After all, audiences first saw him as a suave, slick, blasterslinger, criminal, and smuggler, who always found himself in the debt of crime bosses or performing an unseen quickdraw in cantinas. So it should be exciting to see if he was as sly or crafty in the earlier days as he was in A New Hope.

But the one thing to note is Kennedy’s reference to Frederic Remington’s works of art. Pictured below is one of Remington’s most famous pieces called “A Dash for the Timber” that sees a group of cowboys engaged in a shootout with Apache Indians from the rear. The desert-like environment tells us a lot of what cinematographer Bradford Young will have to work with.

Just last week, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) joined the cast in a role that “rounds out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.” The film is also looking at Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok, Westworld), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), and Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) to fill the role of the rumored Sana Starros, Solo’s first wife.

The untitled young Han Solo spinoff is set to open in theaters on May 25, 2018.
