It wouldn’t be much of a Tomb Raider film if there wasn’t someone standing in Lara Croft’s way. The title character will be played by Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander, and now we know who will be playing the villain.
Vice Principles and The Hateful Eight star Walton Goggins is currently in talks to play the villain role. More on the story below.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news earlier today. While they say he is close to inking the deal, there isn’t much detail as to who this villain is or if he is based on a villain from the video game series. Not surprising at all considering the film is still in the very early stages of development. But since Goggins has a lengthy resume playing the villain, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing him in talks here. So it should be interesting to see what kind of villain he will play.
Here’s what we do know about the movie. The film is directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave), following a young and untested Croft on her first adventure. The 2013 video game of the same name was a reboot that focused on Lara Croft’s first expedition. In it, she ventures to an island off the coast of Japan, where she discovers a violent cult has taken up residence to worship a queen who once ruled there. So the new movie could be more along the lines of that. We’ll just have to wait and see of course.
Angelina Jolie famously played the role of Lara Croft twice. The first was in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and the second was in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
There really isn’t much else to report on. Warner Bros. and MGM have scheduled Tomb Raider for a March 16, 2018 release.
