Nicholas Yee's Cello Covers

Everyone loves a good music cover, especially an instrumental one. You can find many of these on YouTube. One such source is Nicholas Yee, who does cello covers of various music.

Among his many covers you can find some good geeky covers of the music of favorites like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and the recent hit Stranger Things. Continue below for more and to give these cello covers a watch.

In addition to the covers below, he’s also done some collaborations with non-cello musicians for covers of music like “Into the West” from Lord of the Rings and a Studio Ghibli medley, along with some other solo covers such as Beauty and the Beast and Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar score.

You can find the rest of his work over at his YouTube channel, which also includes lots and lots of Christmas music if you’re in a festive mood this week.

Medley of various themes from the “Star Wars” films, originally composed by John Williams. All sounds were made using a cello.

Growing up, I was such a huge fan of the “Star Wars” films and the iconic music that accompanied them. I’ve been wanting to record a cello medley of this music for the past year, but consistently felt intimidated by the richness and power of the original score. I resolved to push forward with the arrangement in the new year, and I hope I’ve done it justice!

This season, I’ve been getting caught up in the “Game of Thrones” hype and the intense music of the series. Due to the large presence of solo cello in the score, I was feeling obligated to record a rendition of some of the main themes. Enjoy!

Original music composed by Ramin Djawadi. All sounds were made using a cello.

Medley of themes from the “Stranger Things” series, originally by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. Featuring my good friends Adam Caulfield and Katherine Pernal!

Like many others, I was captivated by the “Stranger Things” series when it came out earlier this year and fell in love with its exciting storytelling, engrossing set design and unique blend of creepiness, nostalgia and heartwarming moments. The music adds such richness to the show and I wanted to showcase its strength and versatility in this medley. Enjoy!

Huge thanks to Adam and Katherine for bringing their talents to this project (and playing all the hard parts), and a special thanks to the friends who recommended this show to me!

Edit (December 21, 2016): All sounds in this video were made using a cello. I put this in all of my descriptions but somehow forgot to on this one video. There are actually eight cello parts in addition to percussive sounds which were also made using a cello. Apparently some people seem to be quite offended that these additional parts and percussion are not shown physically in the video so I thought I would explain. Anyway, thanks for watching!
