Molly's Game

The first trailer for Molly’s Game, the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin starring Jessica Chastain, has finally arrived.

Based on the tell-all book of the same name, the film sees Chastain as Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who works her way to the top of underground poker game ladder before she is arrested by the FBI and prosecuted for her crimes. The film also stars Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, and Michael Cera. Check out the full trailer below.

Chastain looks like she is completely in her element as Bloom, a strong, fearless woman who uses her wit and cunning to outsmart the competition. Even with her back against the wall, she finds a way to come out the winner, as we see in the exchange between herself and Elba’s character. She is a character that is proud of what she has accomplished despite the position that she is in, and isn’t afraid to back down.

It’s no surprise that Sorkin’s dialogue is sharp and direct. But the film looks like it won’t follow the traditional chronicling of the subject’s story. As we’ve seen in The Social Network and Steve Jobs, both written by Sorkin, the film will focus on certain points in time that define Bloom’s story. It has worked before in the aforementioned films, so there really is no need to do anything different.

But as fascinating as Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs’ lives were before they became great, Bloom’s story is far more appealing. An Olympic-class Harvard graduate who finds herself running underground poker games in Los Angeles’ Viper Room – called the Cobra Lounge in the film – only to see herself forcibly removed from her job. She then uses the opportunity to use all the skills that she’s learned to run her own exclusive high-stakes poker game where some of Hollywood’s elites, the most powerful businessmen, and the Russian mob came to play.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

MOLLY’S GAME is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.

Molly’s Game hits theaters on November 22, 2017.
