It’s been three years, believe it or not, since True Detective arrived on HBO to massive critical praise. It’s actually already been two years since the not so well-received second season ended.

A third season was a large question mark for a long while now. Back at the beginning of the year, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys said ideas were being exchanged but they weren’t rushing things. Now comes word that season three is officially happening, and some details have been shared.

Starring in the third season will be Mahershala Ali, who won an Academy Award for his performance in Moonlight. He’ll be playing a character named Wayne Hays, a state police detective in Northwest Arkansas. Additional cast members are not yet known.

Series creator, writer, and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto will continue in those roles, except for one episode which will be written by Deadwood creator and writer David Milch. Pizzolatto will also direct alongside Jeremy Saulnier, who helmed Blue Ruin and Green Room.

Not much is known about the new season as far as story goes, but it’s described as revolving around a “macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

No timetable for the new season’s arrival has been revealed yet, though it’s been reported that Pizzolatto has most of the season written.

Executive producing True Detective season three is Pizzolatto, Saulnier, season one stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as well as season one director Cary Fukunaga, Scott Stephens, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros, and Richard Brown.
