Solo: A Star Wars Story

Whenever there is a big trailer for a film like Star Wars, you can be sure that some equally big news will follow. Many were worried about Solo: A Star Wars Story given that the lack of marketing is usually a sign of how bad the film is. However, the strategy behind that was that Disney and Lucasfilm wanted to avoid any overlapping confusion between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo may have. And now that The Last Jedi is out of the way, the marketing team is free and clear to push Solo until its Memorial Day weekend release.

With two new trailers released this past week, more details about the latest spinoff are now emerging, and they are giving us a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming film. More on the story below.

Entertainment Weekly had exclusive access to Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is being described as a “western crossed with a film noir, freighted with offbeat humor and set in the criminal underbelly of a galaxy being torn apart.” In the film’s early days of pre-production, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy described the film as a western inspired by the paintings of Frederic Remington.

The film takes place years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, which may explain why the legendary Millennium Falcon’s exterior looks so sleek and why the interior is so clean.

Kennedy confirms there will be a heist element that plays into the film, with Han having to prove his mettle by stealing something aboard the roller coaster-like train called The Conveyex – something that we saw in the latest trailer.

Kennedy says Solo “might be a little more immature” and may be a little less experienced, and he “may hone his cynicism over time, but he’s very wary.” She adds that he has to gain the respect of these criminals even if “they are the lowest of the low.” Something about no honor among thieves.

In their latest piece, EW also confirms the new characters that will appear in the spinoff. We know that Alden Ehrenreich Will play the legendary Han Solo, while Donald Glover will play the ultra-cool Lando Calrissian. They will be joined by the “shadowy” Qui’ra (Emilia Clarke), and Calrissian’s droid sidekick L3-37 (played via motion capture by Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

Solo will also have to cross paths with Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), blaster-toting Val (Thandie Newton), and crime boss Dryden Vos (played by Paul Bettany).

Originally, Vos was a CGI character to played via motion capture by Michael K. Williams. However, the film’s reshoots were pushed back when original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were axed due to creative differences well into production. While Ron Howard replaced them as the film’s new director, Williams could not meet the demands of the reshoots because of a prior obligation. So he was ultimately cut from the film and eventually replaced by Bettany, who plays Vos as a human character.

Ehrenreich tells EW that audiences will be guessing who is good and who is bad, something that even the title character is trying to figure out. “I think that’s exactly what Han’s trying to do throughout the film,” Ehrenreich says.

Solo: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on May 25, 2018.
