Lakeith Stanfield Could Have A Major Role In Jordan Peele’s ‘Candyman’

Lakeith Stanfield

Slowly but surely the spiritual sequel to Candyman, which is being produced by Jordan Peele, is coming into focus. Last year, the film started by hiring Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) to act as director.

And now, they may have found a big star. According to a new report, Sorry To Bother You star Lakeith Stanfield is being eyed to appear in the film. More on the report below.

Collider says Stanfield has been offered a role in the film and is currently in talks. He would play an inquisitive protagonist similar to the one Virginia Madsen played in the 1992 original film. While gender-swapping roles has generally gone from male to female, this one is obviously going from female to male. So it should be interesting to see what other changes the film could have.

Like the original, the sequel will be a horror that addresses black representation in film. The original film is based on a short story written by Clive Barker. In it, a university student named Helen is doing a thesis on graffiti and selects a run-down estate to focus her study. She notices disturbing graffiti in an abandoned building that makes references to an urban legend known as the Candyman. Further inquiries lead her to believe this is connected with recent murders and mutilations in the neighborhood, although the locals are seemingly reluctant to discuss the incidents. She eventually encounters the Candyman himself (played by Tony Todd), gaining notoriety by becoming his latest victim.

However, the new film returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

Stanfield had quite a year in 2018, having appeared in FX’s Atlanta, along with two films: the criminally underseen Sorry To Bother You, and the less than stellar The Girl in the Spider’s Web. He can next be seen in the romantic comedy Someone Great, and Rian Johnson’s murder mystery Knives Out.

The new Candyman is slated to hit theaters on June 12, 2020.
