SDCC 2019: ‘Westworld’ Season 3 Trailer: It Won’t Take Much To Bring It All Crashing Down

Westworld season 3

Just when you thought Westworld couldn’t get any crazier, Dolores (Rachel Evan Wood) finds a way to escape and assimilate amongst the populous. At least, that’s what we are led to believe. Season 3 takes us, or at least that’s what it looks like, to a world outside of the theme park. And to get a sense of what that world could be like, HBO has released a brand new trailer this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con.

Watch the trailer here below.

Based on the trailer, the new season won’t be nearly as focused on what goes on in the park, but rather, how these hosts are living outside of their natural settings. For there is just more than the control center. There’s also the “real world,” and another portion of the park that looks like it takes place during World War II. That isn’t an entirely new concept given that we’ve seen the Delos park have a section that looks like it’s set in India.

But for those who are worried about Season 3 having an overly complex mystery, fear not, co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan said there won’t be much of that in this season as previous seasons. Here’s what he told EW:

“This is season is a little less of a guessing game and more of an experience with the hosts finally getting to meet their makers.”

However, that doesn’t mean the mystery is out of the picture. That guessing game will help develop these characters for subsequent seasons. “I love shows that find a groove and hang with it for 100 episodes “” that was never this show,” Nolan says. “We always wanted every season to find our characters in radically different circumstances. And with a cast this talented, watching the metamorphosis of all these characters is one of the most fun parts.”

Dolores has certainly gone through many changes in the two seasons that she has appeared in, and it looks like there is still room to grow. Not only that, Maeve (Thandie Newton) never made it out of the park, and the trailer shows that she didn’t even return to Westworld. So while the series won’t take place in Westworld, the idea of the wild west will still plays a part in the “real world.” Here’s what co-showrunner Lisa Joy told EW:

“Part of the story plays out in the Western United States, and that’s a thematic through-line in the show “” the American West as a setting and an ethos”¦The idea of the West as a wild place, where just over the next hill or horizon there are no rules. On that thematic level, Dolores emerges to figure out what happened to the real West. And the answer is: We paved the thing over, and civilization eventually caught up with all those people who were running away from it.”

Honestly, Season 2 got overly complex for its own good, and it became hard to come back to. By the final episode, I was just glad it was all over. But with what Nolan and Joy have been saying, Season 3 will be a change of pace. Let’s hope it is for the better.

Aaron Paul and Vincent Cassel join the cast. Ed Harris, Tessa Thompson, and Jeffrey Wright will return to reprise their respective roles.

Westworld Season 3 debuts on HBO in 2020.
