| Jared Leto Joins The Cast Of ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel
Fresh off having his role as the Joker in the current late summer superhero smash Suicide Squad reduced to a brief cameo, Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto has signed on to co-star in the untitled sequel to the 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. Cameras are set to roll next month on the film that has been in development for years, with a release scheduled for later next year. Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker responsible for Prisoners, Sicario, and the upcoming Arrival, is directing the sequel from a screenplay penned by original Blade Runner scribe Hampton Fancher and former Heroes/Smallville producer Michael Green. Fancher based the original on the late Philip K. Dick‘s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

| ‘Star Trek: Discovery’: New Details Revealed Including Female Lead, Gay Character, Setting |

A few weeks ago the first details on that new Star Trek series that will be shown on CBS’s new streaming service All Access were revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, including the title, Star Trek: Discovery. Today at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Bryan Fuller discussed the show in further detail with reporters, revealing that Discovery will have a female lead character who will be a lieutenant commander instead of a captain. The reasoning behind this decision, in the words of The Hollywood Reporter’s Lesley Goldberg, was to allow the series “to explore stories from a different point of view.”

Suicide Squad is out and kicking butt at the box office despite withering reviews. Wonder Woman is in post-production and expected to be one of the big blockbusters of next summer. Justice League is still filming and hopes to pack theaters and reap riches the following November. Next on deck is Aquaman, which has yet to begin filming under the direction of James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) but is locking up a fine cast headed by star Jason Momoa (who makes his screen debut as DC Comics’ Atlantean warrior king in Justice League). Now it has been revealed which villain Aquaman will oppose in his first big screen solo adventure: Black Manta, one of Arthur Curry’s greatest foes. More below.

Emily Lawrence, an actress, writer, and veteran audiobook narrator, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a short film she is writing, producing, and starring in titled Lilith in the Garden. Described as a sci-fi drama that “looks at what makes us who we are,” Lilith is to be directed by Leslie Bumgarner, a longtime cinematographer who recently started to take on directing projects for short features and television, with actor Rob Mathes set to play the male lead. The target fundraising goal for the campaign is $5,000, and donors will be treated to all manner of juicy perks depending on the size of their donation. | Superman Lives! ‘Man Of Steel’ Sequel Reportedly In Development At Warner Bros.
Three years after it launched DC Comics’ cinematic universe with a $668 million global box office gross, the Zack Snyder-directed Superman reboot Man of Steel is finally getting a standalone sequel, as an unnamed source familiar with the developing film at Warner Bros. told Umberto Gonzalez at The Wrap. Plans for a sequel were changed not long after Man of Steel was released in the summer of 2013 when Snyder announced at that year’s San Diego Comic-Con that the follow-up would pit Superman against Batman. The end result, released this past March, was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which also featured the first appearance of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg.
