Every October, over 2,500 haunted house attractions open their creaky, cobweb-covered doors for business. Millions of people from across the country visit these homegrown haunts in search of a good scare. But beneath the fake blood and cheap latex masks, there are whispers of truly terrifying attractions – places where the blood is real and the costumed crazies that prowl the halls aren’t volunteers, they’re murderers.

Searching for an authentic, blood-curdling scare for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down the world’s scariest, most extreme underground haunt. Just when their search hits a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the haunt has come to them.

Read Adam Frazier’s review of this film from May here.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the X-Men movie I’ve dreamed of since my youth, back in the day when I mowed lawns during the dog days of summer to save up enough money to buy the latest X-comics off the shaky wire racks at my neighborhood 7-11. Those were the days when the comics were written by the great Chris Claremont and drawn by his gifted artistic equal Jim Lee and Future Past is the closest we’ve come yet to having a motion picture that brings those bold emotions, visuals, and outrageous “only in the funny books” style of four-color storytelling to explosive life.

As the late, great Mickey Newbury once sung, the future’s not what it used to be. The world has long been ravaged by a war between an alliance of mutants and sympathetic humans and the relentless robotic mutant hunters the Sentinels. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his X-Men are now the last remnants of the resistance and every day their numbers get lower. Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) and her ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time has helped give them a slim advantage in the ongoing battle and that power must now be used to send someone back to the point in history when the war became unavoidable: the assassination of Sentinel creator Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) at the hands of Xavier’s former friend and surrogate sister Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in 1973.

Netflix Streaming

Wondering what’s new for October 2014 in Netflix Instant? There’s plenty, but I’m here to give you some recommendations, since Netflix likes to make it difficult for you to figure out what’s new in their service in movies and television series.

Some of my favorite picks include Sons Of Anarchy: Season 6, The Walking Dead: Season 4, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Galaxy Quest, Django Unchained, and Tombstone. There’s plenty more, but below are some of my favorite picks for the month.

Magnet Productions
Rated R | 99 Minutes
Release Date: May 1, 2014 (U.S.)

It is such a welcome feeling to a horror nut like me to watch a movie and actually feel unnerved and uncomfortable. That was how I felt just minutes into Ti West‘s The Sacrament. In a genre as cliché driven as horror, ominous foreshadowing is par for the course. “Let’s investigate,” “I have a bad feeling about this,” “I’ll be right back”… we’ve seen it all before. But there’s something about real-life plausible situations that can be much scarier than possessed dolls and masked killers. Enter Eden Parish.

Patrick (Kentucker Audley) works for Vice, a multimedia company from New York that specializes in controversial stories mainstream news outlets won’t cover. His sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz) is a recovering addict who joins a reclusive parish that ups and leaves the U.S. to an undisclosed location outside of the U.S. This seems like the perfect story for Vice so Patrick, lead reporter Sam (AJ Bowen), and cameraman Jake (Joe Swanberg) set out via helicopter to meet Caroline and the residents of the “heaven on earth” that is Eden Parish.
