Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: July 16, 2014
Cover Price: $3.50 Woo hoo! That was my gut reaction to seeing Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder #2 was available for review. After having read the first installment of this five-issue miniseries last month, I had been waiting impatiently for this day to come. The only thing that makes this better is that I get the chance to let you know about it, too! Picking up the morning following the events of issue #1, we watch as Sir Edward Grey conducts a thorough investigation of the area where he was assaulted. Skipping over details that allude to the supernatural, Grey explains the events to local authorities all the while quizzing them about the murder that originally brought him there in the first place. Learning that the victim had last been seen in the company of the local pharmaceutical mogul, he takes his leave to pursue that lead.

The Goon: One for the Road
Written by Eric Powell
Art by Eric Powell
Colors by Dave Stewart
Cover by Jack Davis
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: June 25, 2014
Cover Price: $3.50 I should start by saying that I am unfamiliar with Eric Powell‘s long-running series The Goon. That said, once I finished the one-shot One for the Road, I’m determined that I will quickly be remedying that oversight in my collection. One for the Road was created as a tribute to long-time cartoonist Jack Davis. Davis, one of the founders of Mad Magazine, did the cover art for this book. The book itself is a fitting tribute. Jack Davis and Mad Magazine were hugely influential for many artists and comedians (and writers like yours truly), so it was a joy to read something that perfectly captured the spirit of Davis’ work.

Cover Price: $3.50 One thing you can always count on Dark Horse Comics for is the supernatural and paranormal comics. I say this as a compliment, mind you. And while some are better than others, I am seldom disappointed in anything they publish. Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder #1 is certainly no exception. But this isn’t your average story, it combines an old fashioned mystery with a multitude of surprises. We begin with the peculiar death of a royal servant. The coroner sees the death as a puzzling anomaly so Sir Edward Grey is sent to make sense from the bizarre symptoms found on the body. One event leads to another and Grey finds himself en route to a small outer-lying town looking for more clues. Suspicious circumstances and the oddities of the townspeople cause him to dig a little deeper than normal. The discovery of a clue and a late night encounter prove that he is on the right path. For many people, a near death experience would have them packing and on the next train out of town. But for a paranormal investigator it just solidifies his resolve to get to the truth at all costs.
