Holiday Geek Gift Guide: Action Figures and Collectibles

Put on your coats and caps, everybody! There’s pine needles on the living room floor, snow on the ground, and a scent of cinnamon in the air. Your dogs and cats are tearing apart wrapping paper, your family’s in town and you can’t stop drinking eggnog for some reason. That could only mean one thing, folks, it’s the nondescript religious holiday season! And that means that it’s time to go into credit card debt so that you can show those closest to you that you care, you know? And to make it a little bit easier on you guys, we here at Geeks of Doom have been shoveling our driveways so that we can deliver to you this, 2011 The Holiday Geek Gift Guide! The best gifts possible for the geeks on you gift-giving list!

Our geek culture is swarmed with disagreements and differences, and that’s one of the greatest things about it. There is no real defining quality of us as a whole that can pigeonhole us into one singular category. Take comics for example, some of us love the big and bold antics of creators like Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, while others of prefer the slow and methodical pace of a Grant Morrison. And some of us can’t even stand superhero comics! And that’s fine. Some of us prefer Star Trek to Star Wars, and to be more current, there are still people that can’t stand Dr. Who! But if one thing could unite us, if there’s one solitary format that our culture can gravitate towards, it’s collectibles. Y’know, action figures, statues, original art from comics, poster prints. Things of that nature. Sure, not all of us are like that, but a strong, wide-spanning group of us love to collect things. It’s in our nature, so I’ve taken the time to provide several shelf-filling collectibles from across all of geek culture so that you can put these on your lists of things to buy for people you care about. Now, there’s going to be some expensive stuff on here, so make sure it’s someone you REALLY care about. We’re talking share the same bed kind of care about. Or, at least live in the same house. Is this getting too personal? Well, let’s move on, then!

Story by Mike Mignola
Art by Richard Corben
Colors by Dave Stewart
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: November 9, 2011
Cover Price: $14.99

It seems like Mike Mignola and artist Richard Corben had one plan for their recent collaboration on Hellboy: House of the Living Dead. Pack the graphic novel with as many classic horror monsters as possible then have Hellboy beat them to a bloody pulp. Congratulations guys, mission accomplished, they were all there in a manner of speaking, vampires, monsters, ghosts, and let’s not forget Hellboy, kicking in all their skulls. Mignola expresses his affections towards classic B horror movies in his introduction and proceeds to craft a love letter to them through Hellboy: House of the Living Dead, a love letter written in the blood of several unfortunate ghouls.

Comic Review: Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1

Dark Horse Comics: Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1 Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1
Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
Art by James Harren
Colors by Dave Stewart
Letters by Clem Robins
Covers by Dave Johnson, Francesco Francavilla
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: September 28, 2011
Cover Price: $3.50

Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1 was a twisty little read. Abe is one of my favorite characters from Mike Mignola. Unfortunately, a lot of folks have only the most basic exposure to this character thanks to the Hellboy movies, which don’t portray him in his best light. This comic brings a combination of Abe’s intellect and badassery to the printed page.

A simple trip to meet an acquaintance’s relative leads us to the beginning of a warped tale. A lot of this story is a build up to the last few pages, of which I can tell you nothing without spoiling it for you. That said, in this issue Abe brings the pain. Everything he does to his enemies is calculated and deadly…totally laid the smackdown on the hellish minions.
