The GoD List: Comics For October 16, 2013
|
 |

Each and every week, I, “What did you get at NYCC?†Henchman21, and “Con Crud!†Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 16, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.
I don’t know about you, but I’m still a little warn out from New York Comic-Con, so it’s a bit of a short list this week, with just a couple of new hardcovers for you. But what we lack in quantity, we make up for in quality with two can’t-miss books and one title that the Empress has been waiting for since the summer. And if you’re looking for the hot new single issues out this week, there’s a new issue of Hawkeye, Invincible, Morning Glories, The Sixth Gun, and Batman/Superman to keep you entertained. Now if you don’t mind, we’re going to go take a nap while you enjoy this week’s GoD List!

I know, I know, it’s been a few weeks and once again I must apologize. Your humble list maker has been derelict in his duties (heh, duties), but we’re going to push through and bring you a solid line up of books for this week. We’ve got a new series by one of comics’ best writers, an issue from last week that I hope you didn’t miss out on, and some of my personal favorites. So let’s get down to brass ticky tacks and dive head first into The GoD List!

Um, yeah, sorry about the delay, folks! We were just sitting over here drinking non-alcoholic beverages in celebration of freedom and such, so we got a little too distracted by the holiday to get this up in time. You forgive us, right? Sure you do. I mean, I’m sure that you might have gotten distracted by all the booms and crackering of fireworks too and missed picking up new comics, right? That’s what I thought. Well, there’s a decent amount of stuff that came out this week, but a lot of it is more new issues than new comics, you know what I mean? Not a lot of fresh pickings. Nonetheless, you should read on because there are new comics to love and behold. Which ones? Like I said, you’ll need to read on for The GoD List.

Morning Glories bears more than a passing resemblance to Lost. It’s not a straight rip-off, but the plot structure is undeniably derivative. So what? True originality in fiction is incredibly rare. Originality is also completely unrelated to entertainment value, which is how I judge my comics. And that’s where Morning Glories shines: this series is a true page-turner. At the end of each issue you can sense a collective “d’oh!” from the thousands of fans devouring the issue on release day. Morning Glories is a sure bet to end on a shocking cliffhanger will hang, unelaborated, for several issues. The ever-deepening mystery cannot sustain itself indefinitely, however. Fans demand answers. How much longer can writer Nick Spencer slab layers on to his mystery cake before fans start tuning out?

Guys, a lot has happened over the past week. I got a job, Henchman got a mohawk, and DC Comics thought it would be a good idea to release Watchmen prequels! Well, if you want to read about that, then you can just go look to another article, because there will be none of that here! What will be here? Well, we’ve got some pleasant surprises for you, so just keep on reading as we show you The GoD List, a place where you will find out all of the comics that you should be reading this week!

My Henchman is on sabbatical this week, so I’ve decided to go solo. If H21 were here, though, I’m sure he’d ramble on about a variety of comics, but he’s not. So, get over it! But enough of all that! I wanted to address to important items that are on my radar this week. Firstly, it’s the week after my birthday and none of you got me anything! I’m so incredibly disappointed in each and every one of you. I spend my time giving you something entertaining to read and this is how you repay me!? In the words of the legendary The Iron Sheik, “::expletive deleted::!†Goodness gracious alive, folks! Anyway, on to the next item on the docket, it’s Wrestlemania week! Everyone celebrate! YAY! CM Punk is going to beat Chris Jericho and that’s a fact, Jack! Oh yeah, this feature is about comics…. Here’s this week’s The GoD List!

Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading
|
 |

Creator owned books are probably the greatest thing about the comics industry for a variety of reasons. As a punk rock, do-it-yourself kind of guy, I love the lack of corporate involvement in creator owned comics. You see, when you read a book from Marvel or DC Comics, you’re reading a book that has editorial mandates and corporate interest from Disney and Warner Bros., respectively. To emphasize what that means, it restricts creator input in a series that you’re putting your hard-earned money towards. You’re not just reading a comic from Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham, you’re reading a comic by those two, Jim Lee, Dan DiDio, Mike Marts, and many others who should have no business having input on a comic made by incredibly creative people. You’re not reading a comic that’s sole intention is to be good, you’re reading a comic that a company thinks will sell units. The primary goal of these comics is to make money. So, in essence, you’re losing so much with editorial involvement that’s not there when you read a creator owned book. No one tells these people what they can and cannot have within the pages of their creations. And while I adore characters like Batman and many other mainstream heroes, there’s something magical and pure about reading a comic written and drawn by the creators of the property.
So, it’s in honor of Creator Owned Day that we wanted to take the time to have a look at some Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading if you’re not already.
