Recently, The Wrap did a story on the new 3D technology and the vice-grip hold it has on the world of Hollywood. As we are all very much aware, it feels like every single movie that’s made these days is released in 3D, and in a lot of cases, we find ourselves asking the question “Why?” over and over again. In this new article, it is revealed that apparently Ridley Scott himself is “breathing down the necks” of executives at Universal to spend an extra $7-8 Million to make a 3D version of his upcoming period action/drama, Robin Hood. This is obviously one of the more confusing titles that we’ve heard associated with the 3D phenomena, and it lead us to begin wondering when this whole technology has just gone too far?

Many big names in the business have laid solid claim to 3D being the future of cinema, but judging by the collective feelings of movie fans, it is unclear whether this is what people want. There’s no doubt at all that when it comes to films like Avatar, which is built specifically for that technology, and fun movies like Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, 3D can be a really great time. But when this is happening so often that a movie like Robin Hood is even joining the party, you can’t help but think it’s only a matter of time before we see movies like Steven Spielberg‘s Abraham Lincoln biopic Lincoln getting in line for some 3D action. That’s just too much.

Empire Magazine celebrated their 20th anniversary a while back, and they made sure to do it proper. Many big news stories and goodies came from the event, but one of the big plans they hatched, was to attempt to book a bunch of the world’s biggest Hollywood stars for a photo shoot where they would re-create some of their own classic film scenes.

The result: big stars showed up. Lot’s of them. And though they didn’t get completely dressed in costume (the plan was to simply shoot them in nice attire with obvious props used to clarify the film), many fantastic images now exist. The list of names is impressive and includes Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Christian Bale, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Laurence Fishburne, Ben Stiller, Viggo Mortensen, Kevin Spacey, Matt Damon, Anthony Hopkins, and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, naturally! Movies that were re-created include Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Braveheart, The Matrix, Sev7en, Silence of the Lambs, Jurassic Park, and Shaun of the Dead.

We’ve all seen the movie Jurassic Park (I assume). The method to the madness of bringing living, breathing dinosaurs back to life in that movie, was to find prehistoric pieces of amber with bugs perfectly preserved inside and extract their blood — assuming that they’ve fed on dinosaurs and contain their DNA. Though it’s likely that scientists have attempted to try this, it’s not something that many expect to actually work. Now comes word that a scientist in Canada has a whole new plan to possibly bring dinosaurs back to life.

Canada Research Chair in Macro Evolution at Montreal’s McGill University, Hans Larsson, believes the fact that dinosaurs are ancestors of birds may just hold the key. He believes that while a chicken is its embryonic stages, he can literally go in and alter this, change that, and replicate what once was, hundreds of millions of years ago.

Larsson has been studying the evolution of birds for a decade now, and truly believes that in time, he could find a way to do the unthinkable: hatch a live prehistoric creature.

It’s been almost a year since renowned author Michael Crichton passed away. In that time frame, his family discovered the completed, but never published 300+ page book called Pirate Latitudes. Before the book is even released on November 24, 2009, it’s naturally already being developed into a movie, and who better to develop the work of Crichton than a one Steven Spielberg and writer David Koepp.

Spielberg and Crichton worked together on multiple projects, such as creating E.R. and the movie Twister. Of the work they did together, nothing stands out more than the Crichton book that Koepp adapted to script form and Spielberg directed that went on to change movies forever: Jurassic Park. Fittingly enough, as it turns out, Mr. Spielberg had always wanted to do a pirate movie, and now there’s one here looking at him.

At this moment, Spielberg is only developing and producing the project, but there is the chance that he’ll direct it, as well. Considering the material, the fallen friend, the story behind it all, it doesn’t sound like something he might direct…it sounds like a project that he simply HAS to direct. Only time will tell for sure.
