NYCC 2016 Screen Junkies Panel Movie Fights Honest Trailers

For the second straight year, I spent a late night at New York Comic-Con watching the Screen Junkies gang. Screen Junkies currently sits at just under 5.7 million YouTube subscribers and is one of the preeminent places on the internet for geek culture. The room at NYCC was PACKED, with people standing in the back and alongside the walls. The site’s two biggest hits are Movie Fights and Honest Trailers. The event was emceed by Screen Junkies founder Andy Signore, and featured Dan Murrell, Spencer Gilbert, comic writer Marc Andreyko, Mark Ellis from Collider, and two fans who were competing against the Junkies in the Movie Fight rounds. The Movie Fights section was held as a one-on-one single elimination tournament and featured really interesting questions, and even better responses and arguments.

Okay, first off, the individuals listed above were done so in the order in which their stories were placed in the anthology, subdivided by the type of work they contributed. No offense was implied towards any person who might have been placed incorrectly in this review. There, I’ve been about as politically correct as I can be. All characters are based upon the work of Robert E. Howard. This is, after all, Robert E. Howard’s Savage Sword, Volume 1.

‘Let Me In’ Movie and Comic On The Way

Let Me InDark Horse Comics and Exclusive Media Group’s Hammer Films have just announced a partnership in which they will create a series of co-branded original graphic novels and comic books. Their first collaboration is going to be inspired by Hammer Films’ upcoming suspense thriller Let Me In.

Let Me In is a horrid tale about a young boy named Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who is viciously bullied by his classmates and neglected by his divorcing parents. Owen spends most of his days plotting revenge on his middle school tormentors and his evenings spying on the other inhabitants of his apartment complex. When Abby (played by Chloe Moretz aka HIT-GIRL from Kick-Ass), a new neighbor, moves in next to Owen he finds himself with a strange new friend. But the young girl has a terrible secret that will forever change Owen’s life.

The new American remake of the film is based on my favorite vampire film of 2008, the widely acclaimed Tomas Alfredson-directed Swedish film Lat den ratte komma in (Let the Right One In), produced by Hammer Films, and written and directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

Crazies coverNow begins the media onslaught for The Crazies franchise and no matter what format your heart desires, it seems you will be satiated. Originally a 1973 film by George Romero, The Crazies now has a new theatrical remake from Overture Films, a comic book series, Facebook “tower defense” game, motion comic, an interactive game, and an iPhone app.

The Top Cow printed comic book consists of four chapters: Hopman Bog, Dwyer Creek, Black Pond, and Ogden Marsh (first two issues were released yesterday with the second two following on February 24, 2010). The comic series traces an outbreak that takes over the minds and bodies of the citizens in Ogden Marsh, Iowa, and each chapter focuses on a different aspect of this epidemic. Jeff Katz of American Original produced the comic book on behalf of Overture Films and Participant Media. The writers for the miniseries are Ivan Brandon, Josh Fialkov, Brian Reed, and Marc Andreyko. You can download the comic book covers at www.thecrazies-movie.com/comicbooks.

The motion comic is being handled by Starz Digital Media, in association with Double Barrel Motion Labs, and will be a four-part animated companion to the film based on the comic miniseries. Episode 1 of the motion comic series, “Hopman Bog,” will be available for purchase on the iTunes and PlayStation® Network platforms on February 23, 2010.
