“Hey! Stop fuckin’ with Korean Jesus. He ain’t got time for yo problems! He’s busy… with Korean shit!” – Ice Cube, 21 Jump Street

Back in 2008, when Columbia Pictures announced they were developing a film adaptation of 21 Jump Street, I was wracked with cynicism. “Really?” I asked incredulously. “Because Starsky & Hutch and Bewitched did so well?” My cynical nerd-brain jumped immediately to the place it so often does these days, “Just what we need, another reboot that no one asked for!”

Weird Science Image

Writer and actor Michael Bacall, who worked on the screenplays for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World with Edgar Wright, found footage party flick Project X, and the movie remake of the ’80s TV series 21 Jump Street, has been hired to pen the script for Weird Science for Universal Pictures.

The movie will be a remake of the 1985 comedy of the same name written and directed by the late, great John Hughes, which starred Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as a couple of nerds who accidentally create the perfect woman using a computer. What they end up with, however, is much more than they ever expected. The original also starred Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, and Robert Downey Jr.

Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) has been tapped to write the screenplay, and Tropic Thunder director Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld of Red Hour Films will be producing.

When asked about what the movie would be about, Grossman responded “To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus (played in Tropic Thunder by Robert Downey Jr.), “˜I don’t read the script, the script reads me.'”
