Talks are in the early stages, but it’s being reported that Sharlto Copley has been offered the role of the villain in director Spike Lee‘s remake of the classic Korean film Oldboy.

Copley would join Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen on the movie, which tells the story of a man who’s kidnapped and held captive for 15 years without an explanation as to why he was taken. While prisoner he only has a TV to keep up with the times, quickly learning that his wife has been murdered and that he’s the prime suspect. Last we heard, a remake of the the classic South Korean film, Oldboy, was on the way with Steven Spielberg directing and Will Smith starring. This sounded like an April Fools joke at first, and thankfully things never came together to the delight of many fans.

Now another potentially true April Fools–sounding bit of news has come to surface. According to Twitch, Mandate Pictures still plans on remaking Oldboy, and they’re now in negotiations with Spike Lee to direct it. Lee, of course, is best known for films like Malcolm X, Inside Man, and Miracle at St. Anna.

The Decade List: The 59 Best Films Of The Past Ten Years – Chapter III

The Decade List: The 59 Best Films Of The Past Ten Years – Chapter IIINOTE: For structural reasons and to ensure that this list is super-duper pretty at all times, we’ll be posting this same intro for all sections of The Decade List. If you’ve already read all of this, you can just head down to the continuation of our list!

Let’s just get it out of the way right off the ol’ bat: yes, we know it’s been a few months since we left the decade. Most folks undertook this heavy task pre-2010, but we decided that it would be a little bit better to let the new year settle in a bit before hitting you with something of this magnitude.

So here we are, geeks: we’ve officially arrived in FUTURE *cue retro ’50s sci-fi music* and still we have no freakin’ flying cars yet. What’s the deal with that? While it is pretty exciting to be inside of the year 2010 — a year that always seemed unreachable to us mere mortals — we are also exiting another entire decade that leaves us staring at one majorly epic task. That task? To search, dig, locate, retrieve, organize, polish, and present the very best films of the past ten years!

We must once again declare that this list is also simply opinion. You are are without doubt going to find movies here that you hate and do not think deserve to be included. You will surely think of movies that you think should not only be on here, but that should be at the very top of the list. There will even be some that I have not seen and thus, can not add. Even at this very moment, I sit, worrying and wondering if I’ve forgotten any that I would include; that’s just the way things fly when compiling something this massive.

With all of that said, we invite you in to relax and check out Chapter III our list, The Decade List: The 59 Best Films of the Past Ten Years!

‘I Am Legend’ Writer To Script ‘Oldboy’ Remake

OldboyAfter the shocking news that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith might be making an American remake to cult Hong Kong classic Oldboy, the Internet was buzzing. But now comes buzz-killing news that I Am Legend and Poseidon writer Mark Protosevich will be writing the script, and people aren’t so thrilled.

Though it is Steven Spielberg and it could still be awesome, we all know what a bad script can do — even with such a legendary directory.

Let’s take a look at Protosevich’s track record. The Cell: eh, trippy and f’d up, but that’s about all. Poseidon: not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but not good either; oh, and it’s a remake of a classic. I Am Legend: one of the worst movies I saw last year; again, a remake of sorts. Thor: still a while before we’ll see this one, if ever… which means questions begin to arise here as well.

Steven Spielberg & Will Smith To Remake ‘Oldboy’

OldboyDreamWorks is in the process of trying to secure the rights to remake South Korean indie cult hit Oldboy. Chatting about possibly collaborating on said remake for Universal is none other than Steven Spielberg and Will Smith.

Oldboy is a revenge movie. It follows Dae-su Oh (Min-sik Choi) who’s kidnapped and kept captive in a room for 15 years. If the capture wasn’t inexplicable enough, he’s randomly released, given some money, clothes, and a cell phone and sent on his way. This is where he begins his quest to find his captors and gain his revenge.

I’m not a person who has seen Oldboy, but it is one that I’ve always had on my list to see due to the incredible amount of love people have for it. Even having not seen it, if you would have told me that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were going to do the American remake (wait, how has it taken 5 years to remake this when we’re remaking most foreign films before they’re even done shooting these days?), then I would have certainly laughed at your silly attempts at attention.
