Transformers: Age of Extinction

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Iron Man scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, Pacific Rim 2 writer Zak Penn, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Lost“˜s Jeff Pinkner, Ant-Man co-writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, Lindsey Beer (The Fugitive remake), Christina Hodson (the re-imagining of Wizard of Oz), former Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight, Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down), and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Black List script Hibernation) are all members of the Transformers shared universe writing team. Led by Akiva Goldsman, the plan is to take the franchise beyond the films we have seen so far. Rumors of this expansion include spinoffs centering on Bumblebee, a Cybertron origins film, and possibly Beast Wars. But there is one certainty: Paramount wants to have a Transformers 5, and they want Michael Bay to direct it.

The plan was to have a script ready in time for Bay when he completes his work on the Bengazhi film 13 Hours. While nothing is official yet, it appears that the Armageddon director is interested in coming back to direct his fifth Transformers film. But there is more. A new report is coming out that give us a look at what the writing teams have come up with in four short months. More on the story below.

Ready Player One

Back in March Steven Spielberg was named the director of Ready Player One. The film is an adaptation of the Ernest Kline novel of the same name. But because Spielberg has been quite busy working on Bridge of Spies and The BFG, casting director Ellen Lewis has been responsible with overseeing the auditioning process.

So far Gene Wilder is the only actor rumored for a role. Previous reports have attached him to play James Donovan Halliday – creator of OASIS, the fictional gaming world that serves as the setting for the novel. It may be a while before we get a confirmation on that, but there is a new shortlist of actresses who are vying for the female lead. Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, The Signal), and Lola Kirke (Mistress America) are three of the top contenders the role of Art3mis. More on this and who is up for the role of the male lead below.

Gene Wilder

With Steven Spielberg is confirmed to direct two major films: Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One and Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Fans of both novels have already put together their dream cast. The BFG is slated for a July 2016 release, with Ready Player One set for a December 2017 release. While the former has already got its cast, the latter will eventually get to its casting phase.

But a new rumor going around says that Spielberg may want Gene Wilder to come out of retirement to star in one of the two films. More on this story below.

Jurassic World Chris Pratt

I had a feeling Jurassic World was going to be a huge hit, but never in my wildest dreams did I suspect it would surpass The Avengers to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. $1.522 billion in global office? Amazing.

What doesn’t surprise me is that Universal Pictures has not only announced a sequel to World today, but they have also given it a release date of June 22, 2018. Colin Trevorrow, the indie filmmaker who brought a little life to the moribund franchise as World‘s director, will co-write the script with Derek Connolly. Together they wrote both the recent dino-tastic blockbuster and Trevorrow’s 2012 feature directorial debut, Safety Not Guaranteed.

Experiencing ‘Jaws’ In The Theater 40 Years Later

Roy Scheider in Jaws

When I was 16, I got my first job, as an usher at the local movie theater. My plan was simple: exploit my position and the modest $5.15 minimum wage salary to both pad my budding DVD collection (DVDs were new in 1998), and see as many new movies as possible for free. Mission accomplished. More than half my life later I have a very respectable collection, and STILL get in for free occasionally at that theater. I can honestly estimate that I’ve seen hundreds of movies in the theater. All those experiences were great… well, no… there was Wild Wild West.

But they all pale in comparison to 7:00 pm Sunday night, when I got to sit and watch Jaws on the big screen with my family, and hundreds of adoring fans. The screening was part of the recently announced 40th anniversary screenings.
