As strange as it was to think that Darren Aronofsky””director behind indie hits like Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan“”was going to direct a sequel to X–Men Origins: Wolverine, it was still pretty intriguing to think about. But alas, Aronofsky eventually had to drop out of the project due to personal reasons, leaving the job open for another…but would they be similar to the departing Aronofsky or someone more suited to the comic book/action genre a Wolverine movie would play in?

Enter James Mangold, the new director chosen by 20th Century Fox to direct the sequel, titled The Wolverine. Mangold’s résumé does include an action flick””the recent Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz feature Knight & Day“”but the rest of his works are mostly drama–based with titles like Cop Land, Kate & Leopold, Identity, 3:10 to Yuma, and Academy Award winners Girl, Interrupted and Walk the Line under his belt.

Two of the stranger announcements of recent memory involved Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky. One was when we were informed that he would be directing a remake of RoboCop and the other was news that he was going to take on a sequel to the not-so-popular comic book spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine, titled The Wolverine.

It didn’t take long before RoboCop fell apart, but there was a point in time where it seemed like he was really going to join star Hugh Jackman and deliver a Wolverine flick. Now comes word, unfortunately, that Aronofsky has decided to step away from the movie, though it seems as though he had little choice in the matter.

The somewhat anticipated sequel to 2009’s X-Men spinoff movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is becoming more and more worth your anticipation as time moves forward. From strictly a movie fan’s perspective, Wolverine was all right as an action/superhero flick, but when you have the name Wolverine in your title, a certain level of expectation exists, and comic book fans everywhere were outraged at some of the “minor” adjustments that were made to the mythos.

Because of this, said sequel was never a very exciting prospect…not until recently. In October we found out that one of the more unlikely candidates to direct the movie, Darren Aronofsky, was in fact signing on for the job. Aronofsky has previously directed Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, and the upcoming Black Swan, so his involvement in a Marvel comic book movie was a bit strange and unexpected but exciting at the same time.

If Aronofsky’s involvement wasn’t enough to pique your interest a bit, perhaps this might. The director recently chatted with Hitfix and shared the official title for his sequel, which basically paints the movie as more of a sneaky reboot than an actual sequel.
