In January of last year Jon Schnepp, a Los Angeles-based director of the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse and The Venture Brothers as well as a contributor to the horror anthology feature The ABCs of Death, created a Kickstarter page to raise funds for a documentary he hoped to make about an aborted attempt to reboot the Superman franchise in the late 1990s. After raising the budget necessary to proceed Schnepp managed to secure interviews with several of the principal players and now The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? is very much a reality.

This week both Screen Junkies and CinemaSins—the makers of the two hit YouTube series—are celebrating the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes by tackling Tim Burton‘s oh-so-disappointing 2001 remake, Planet of the Apes.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of what was the much-anticipated theatrical release of Tim Burton‘s original Batman. The film was one of the biggest box office hits of all time when it conquered the summer of 1989 and left its considerable competition eating enough dust to choke Yog-Sothoth, but in the months prior to Batman‘s big screen debut, executives harbored doubts that it could break through with audiences and make movies based on beloved comic books viable moneymakers. Plus, the longtime fans of the Dark Knight were concerned that Hollywood, long-convinced superhero movies were death at the ticket booths, was going to screw this one up royally.

We all know things worked out pretty well for all involved as Batman went on to obliterate every existing box office record and set a new standard for how comic book blockbusters were developed, produced, marketed, and above all respected from that moment forward. In late-1988 Warner Bros. looked many months ahead to the looming June 23, 1989 release date and realized the task of successfully selling this film to summertime movie-going crowds was going to be arduous and potentially a massive failure. They couldn’t afford to make a single misstep with what was going to be a very expensive advertising campaign.

Disney epitomizes branding at its best, using characters and stories across all types of platforms, from digital apps and toys to theme park attractions and virtual experiences. The company’s slate of films in the coming years reflect enhancing established properties and creating new ones in the process. Which Disney films are on their way to seeing sequels, and how can they continue the strength of the brand, as opposed to crippling the franchise?

Peter Pan would say that “faith, trust and pixie dust” would do the trick. We all know, though, that timing, effort and imagination are equally as important.
