IDW Publishing has announced that they will be releasing Road Rage, a new comic featuring a team-up of the father/son team of Stephen King and Joe Hill. Joining them on the book will be sci-fi legend Richard Matheson (I Am Legend). The series will be four issues long, with two issues (subtitled Throttle) written by King and Hill, and the second two (subtitled Duel) written by Matheson. Art for the Throttle part of the series will be done by Nelson Daniel, who has been handling colors for IDW’s The Cape (among other books) and steps up to pencils for this book. The artist for Duel will be Rafa Garres. The whole series is co-written and coordinated by IDW Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall. The first two issues will feature incentive covers by Tony Harris. The series will launch in February.
“Throttle is a story that really begs for a visual adaptation: it’s got bikes and badasses and lots of expensive rolling iron blowing up and getting smashed. Who doesn’t get off on that? I can’t wait to see IDW get behind the wheel and take the thing out for a spin,” said Hill, in a statement release by IDW. In the same statement, King also said of the series, “Working with the great Joe Hill (I can say that because he’s my kid) on such a kick-ass story was a terrific treat, and this version takes it to whole new level. Rev up and climb on!”
Throttle was the first collaboration between Stephen King and Joe Hill, and the short story originally appeared in a limited edition anthology called He is Legend, which honored the work of Richard Matheson. Both Throttle and Duel were released as an audiobook titled Road Rage, which is where the main title for this comic comes from. Duel is the story of a lonely driver that is being chased by a big rig driven by an unseen assailant. Throttle follows up on that story, but trades a lone driver for a motorcycle gang. Fun fact, Duel was the basis for a TV movie that came out in 1971 that was directed by a little guy you may have heard of named Steven Spielberg.
So, you’ve got bikers, evil trucks, high speed action, and some of the best writers of modern sci-fi and horror coming together. Not too shabby, I say. Be sure to check this book out when it’s out in February.
