His newest directorial effort, White House Down, shows audiences that the world’s most recognizable house isn’t as secure as you may think. But fans of his are more likely to recognize the greatest destruction of the White House in Independence Day. Talks of a sequel started to arise in recent years, but what those talks contained in terms of story were withheld from the public. But now that White House Down is coming up, an Independence Day follow-up could be Emmerich’s next project, as new details on the eventual sequel are coming out. VH1 Rock Docs
Not Rated | 106 Minutes
Release Date: March 10th, 2013 (SXSW)
Directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Freaked), Downloaded chronicles the evolution of digital media, focusing primarily on the rise and fall of the pioneering peer-to-peer file sharing Internet service Napster. Featuring exclusive interviews with Napster co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, software developers, musicians, and the music industry elite, Downloaded explores the controversial file sharing software and follows Napster’s rise in 1998, through the gauntlet of copyright infringement lawsuits, to its acquisition by Rhapsody in 2011. Some of those interviewed for Winter’s documentary include Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, former Sony Music Chairman Don Lenner, former CEO of the RIAA Hilary Rosen, Beastie Boys’ Mike D, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis. Although there were already networks that facilitated the distribution of files across the Internet, such as IRC, Hotline, and USENET, Napster specialized in MP3 files, a user-friendly interface, and lightning-fast search speeds. At its peak, Napster had about 80 million registered users and revolutionized the music industry for better or for worse.

It’s pretty well-known that if J.J. Abrams is going to be attached to anything, we won’t know much about it until we see the actual film. It’s something of a standard practice for the filmmaker to keep the audiences interested throughout the production of his projects, and although Star Trek Into Darkness is just under two month away, we are still nowhere closer to finding out the details of Benedict Cumberbatch’s villainous character in the sequel. But some new pictures from Empire should be more than enough to whet our geek appetite until the film’s release. Check out some of the new images below.

Don’t adjust your computer screen or think you are suffering from déjà vu: White House Down is like another Die Hard in the White House kind of film, only thing is, it looks like the production budget for the film is a lot higher than the $80 million that was spend to make Olympus Has Fallen, Antoine Fuqua’s recently released political action film starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman. Watch the trailer here below. The plot is pretty much the same, too: A secret service agent’s knowledge of the Presidential detail and White House will aid him in his mission to save the President of the United States (Jamie Foxx) from certain death. The opening quote about the country’s dark secrets bringing about our nation’s downfall could also be a possible plot twist in the film, but for now, let’s just go with the fact that White House Down is Die Hard in the White House, except with younger and sexier faces.
