‘Man Of Steel’ Producer Talks ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ Wonder Woman, and Zack Snyder

Batman vs Superman

With the still-untitled Batman vs. Superman gearing up for production in 2014, and most of the main cast set in place including Henry Cavill returning as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Joaquin Phoenix being talked about for the role of Lex Luthor.

Now, Man of Steel producer Wesley Coller, who has worked with Zack Snyder on several of his previous projects, is talking about returning to Batman vs. Superman and his thoughts on the feedback being generated so far.

One of the biggest controversies around the project thus far is the announcement of Affleck coming on to portray Batman. Coller, who is no stranger to comic-to-film adaptations having produced Watchmen, notes:

“Anything you do that’s culturally significant, or any time you deal with an iconic character or story, you’re going to hear responses from every possible perspective. So nothing surprises me anymore. If anything, that gauges the relevance of a property or character, and it’s invigorating to know people care that much. It inspires you to make the coolest version of the movie that you can. Ben is the perfect fit for Zack’s vision for this story.”

Of course this is subjective, but here is one more voice towing the line that Affleck was not just a random selection based on box office draw, but is being chosen specifically for the version of the story being set to unfold. Hopefully that will pay off for them.

With the official announcement that Wonder Woman would also appear in the film, it certainly is setting the stage for a cinematic universe where multiple DC characters are being groomed to cross-pollinate titles. But what of a stand-alone Wonder Woman film? Coller has this to note:

“We’re super excited to have [Gal Gadot] in the film, it will be a ton of fun, but at the same time, we’ve got to stay focused on the film we’re working on now.”

This should be all but expected. There is sure to be careful gauging of how well Wonder Woman is received by the general movie-going audience before making any public decisions about creating a solo film.

Lastly, Coller speaks up about the decision to film most of the Man of Steel sequel in Detroit and Michigan. Coller explains:

“The main thing “¦ is whether it satisfies Zack’s creative needs. Does it have what we need in terms of settings? Does it budgetarily make sense? Does it make sense seasonally? When we got to doing that, scheduling-wise, there were a ton of variables to take into account. And as we checked more and more boxes on our list, and the answer was, again and again, Michigan, Michigan, Michigan, it just made sense.”

Detroit and Michigan should make a very interesting location to shoot the film, presumably standing in for post-destruction Metropolis after the events of the first film and Gotham’s most seedy and dangerous areas.

Batman vs. Superman is currently set for release July 15th, 2015. Keep tuned for more news as production gets fully underway over the coming year.

  1. My only problem with Affleck is his age and what that says about the story they’re going to roll out. It implies that Batman has been around awhile and that Superman is the “new guy.” It could be a good story, but where do they go from there? All this talk about a Justice League? How does an old Batman fit into that?

  2. My problem with Affleck is he’s not athletic, remember Dare Devil where Jeniffer Garner made him look like a pencil. I don’t think he will even be-able to make Bruce Wayne believable let alone Batman. And have you seen Henry Cavil as Superman? How will this even work, i guess with a lot of editing. To bad this could have been so great.
