Last week’s Gotham thrilled and chilled us. Here’s a recap of “Under The Knife” before this week’s review. Beware! There are a few spoilers after the recap.
The quirky little Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) we know and love is gone. He got a taste for blood when he butchered Ms. Kringle’s handsy boyfriend. I did not even recognize him, and not because his hair was different and he had no glasses on. He was a maniac killer, enjoying it.
Jim (Ben McKenzie) will not back off even though The Ogre called him and warned him. Why should he worry? He made sure Lee (Morena Baccharin) was safe. Barbara (Erin Richards) is not though.
Selina (Camren Bicondova) and Bruce (David Mazouz) go to the charity ball to swipe keys from Bunderslaw. Selina sees Barbara leave with some handsome rich guy.
Barbara is all kinds of bitter and jaded, but Jason (Milo Ventimiglia) aka The Ogre likes it. He shows her his hidden room which looks like an S&M dream, and she does not run away screaming. Jim does once he realizes who the Ogre has.
Gotham 1.21 “The Anvil Or The Hammer” review: The next morning starts like any other in The Ogre’s home. He insists Barbara stay. But something is different.
The Ogre: “Barbara, I love you. I love you like no one has ever loved you. But if you try to escape, I will chain you to the ceiling and gut you.” This is a guy who knows the way to a woman’s heart.
Hats off to Ventimiglia for making The Ogre as vulnerable as he is a wackjob. Why isn’t he acting in everything?
Does Jim make it in time to save Barbara from a fatal love? You gotta watch to find out!
Bullock (Donal Logue) gets to go to a freaky sex club for rich people. He loves his job. Or does he?
Bruce breaks into Bunderslaw’s safe. He is predictably caught, but what happens next is surprising to him and us. We also get our first Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) sighting. Bruce confesses about Reggie to Alfred (Sean Pertwee).
Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) sets up that new bar with some hidden guns and points his assassin in a Maroni (David Zayas) direction. Surprise, surprise! The outcome was different though. Isn’t everything with Penguin riddled with layers? He sets up the war to come. Really. It’s like The Godfather in Gotham.
Nygma: “No body, no crime. No body, no crime.” Really gross scene. He shows us the crazy once again.
Next week is the end of a wild and engaging season that was chock full of villains (and potential villains), and the heroes to come. The biggest lesson?
“Even good men have secrets.”
The Gotham season finale airs Monday, May 4th, 2015 at 8pm ET on FOX.
