Almost two weeks ago, director Zack Snyder tweeted out two character posters for a special Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice IMAX event. They featured both the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight’s faces obscured by each other’s character logos with the year 2016 right dead in the center.
A variant of the Batman character poster has been released that gives us our first clear look at Ben Affleck decked out in the classic cape and cowl of Gotham’s nocturnal vigilante. You can check it out here below.
The recently-unveiled BvS teaser trailer featured Affleck’s Bruce Wayne wearing the classic suit while concealed in shadow, and we also got a really good look at him suited up in battle armor. I’m sure the toy companies have long lost their minds over the action figure possibilities of the latter.
I like this new poster. It looks like old-school Batman. It’s a far cry from the look of the character in the films of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan. When I look at it, I think of the comics I grew up reading; they rarely traded in gimmicks, and in fact placed greater emphasis on Batman’s skills as a detective, and not, as Jack Nicholson’s Joker once memorably put it, “those wonderful toys.”
Affleck looks mean and grizzled under the cowl; the five o’clock shadow does a fine job of covering his chin butt. When filming finally wraps, maybe he should invest in a pair or two of TV’s Frank and Dr. Forrester’s “chinderwear.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice co-stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons, and Jason Momoa, and will open in theaters on March 25, 2016.
