It will be exciting to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will progress after Phase II. With Guardians of the Galaxy taking us to galaxies unknown, and Ant-Man introducing us to the quantum realm, what sort of dimensions could we expect to see in Phase 3? Well, Doctor Strange will attempt to give us a look at what’s to come.
Marvel President Kevin Feige MC’d the Marvel panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, on Saturday and offered attendees a look at the film, which came in the form of concept art from Marvel’s art department. This is because director Scott Derrickson hasn’t shot anything yet, as filming is scheduled to begin this November. As he would explain, these concept art pieces aren’t revealed to the public this early during the pre-production process, and came straight from the vaults of the Marvel Art Department. As the photos started to be displayed, we clearly see that Doctor Strange will truly be Marvel’s Fantasia (as previously revealed).
More on what we saw at the D23 Expo here below.
Feige apologized for being unable to bring title star Benedict Cumberbatch on stage, as he is busy with Hamlet in England. But the actor was kind enough to give a video greeting, where he “accidentally” showed the Vulcan salute only to apologize because he admits he got his movies mixed up (Cumberbatch starred in Star Trek Into Darkness).
One of the biggest goals for Doctor Strange is to take us to world and dimensions unknown and it will reach that goal by introducing the audience to the idea of astral projection into multiple dimensions. Astral projection is an interpretation of an out-of-body experience (OBE), that assumes the existence of an “astral body” separate from the physical body, and capable of traveling outside of it. More on that a little later.
Though we’ve heard rumors of the film not being an origins story, the presentation included pieces of art of how Doctor Strange became The Sorcerer Supreme. We see a large city, then a hospital, then Doctor Strange standing over an empty operating table in an operating room. Fast forward to the car accident which gravely injuries his hands, we slowly learn about how he goes through great lengths to find a way to heal his hands. His journey takes him to the Far East where he meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who eventually helps him become the title hero.
But then the art shows just how massive this film will be, with one particular piece revealing cars being levitated high off the ground, followed by images of the astral body traveling through the many dimensions we are expected to see. We also see pieces of the title character peering into the vastness of space or a portal.
An artist’s rendering of Benedict Cumberbatch in the Doctor Strange garb is shown complete with a blue suit, red cape, yellow gloves, and gray at this temples.
