Walk Of Shame Elizabeth Banks

Having already dipped her feet in the directing waters for the first time with the very successful Pitch Perfect 2, Elizabeth Banks looks like she is getting ready for her second directorial effort by entering talks to helm a reboot of Charlie’s Angels.

More on the story below.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Banks would also be producing the Sony reboot via her Universal-based Brownstone production company with her husband and producing partner Max Handelman. The studio and producers are now in the process of looking for a writer to pen the screenplay.

The original Charlie’s Angels launched in 1976 on ABC and lasted five seasons with Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith portraying private detectives who were working for a mysterious benefactor Charlie Townsend, who only speaks to the angels via speakerphone. He dubs the three as his Angels, hence Charlie’s Angels. With the help of John Bosley, Townsend’s associate, would go on various assignments which usually involves some sort of dastardly crime.

The series was eventually adapted for the big screen. In 2000, the film of the same name was directed by McG, and it starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. Three years later the team would reunite for a second time for Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Both films received less than stellar reviews with the first grossing $264 million worldwide, while its sequel earned less with $259 million dollars worldwide.

ABC tried to relaunch the series in 2011 with Drew Barrrymore acting as an executive producer. The series starred Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, and Rachel Taylor as the new Angels. However, poor ratings and critical reviews contributed to its inevitable cancellation.

Banks is also attached to direct The Red Queen over at Universal. She can next be seen as Effie Trinket in the final installment of the Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which is set for a November release. She also can be seen on Netflix’s original series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp.

Banks has directed a couple of shorts, but made her official directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2, which has grossed over $285 million worldwide, that’s $170 million more than its predecessor. However the film was met with lukewarm reviews, though it is considered decent, especially since this was Banks’ first directing effort. She is set to return as a producer on Pitch Perfect 3, but it is unclear if she will return to direct the sequel.

  1. As someone who remembers when “Charlie’s Angel’s” debuted on television, I have to ask…Isn’t this more like a reboot of a reboot?
