Marvel Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch

Walt Disney Studios has released the first trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, which you can watch here below.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, an arrogant and selfish surgeon who only cares about his career and wealth. After a terrible accident shatters the bones in his hands, the doctor searches for a method that will restore the use of his hands after exhausting his funds. His final desperate attempt takes him to the far east, where he becomes a disciple of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and learns the ways of magic to not only restore the use of his hands, but also become the Sorcerer Supreme.

The teaser trailer debuted tonight on ABC during Jimmy Kimmel Live! as part of the late-night talk show’s week-long celebration for all things Marvel. The video was introduced by Cumberbatch, who appeared quite mystically on screen on the talk show only to be humiliated by Kimmel, who asked the actor if he could do magic tricks and make balloon animals. In the teaser, we see mostly Strange before his transformation in a very Batman Begins-type scenario.

The studio revealed a teaser poster earlier today that gave us a sense of what to expect and since production on the film was completed last week, what we see in the trailer below is actually a good deal of footage, as opposed to traditional teaser.

Of all the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange has one of the most impressive casts. In addition to Cumberbatch and Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) stars as Strange’s former classmate turned villain, Baron Mordo. Rachel McAdams (About Time, Spotlight) is rumored to play Clea, Doctor Strange’s love interest, and we get a quick glimpse of her in this first look video. Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale), who was once attached to play a different Marvel villain, is playing an unnamed villain, though some believe he will be the villainous spectre Dormammu. Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Steve Jobs) plays Nicodemus West, a long-time admirer of Dr. Stephen Strange’s surgical abilities.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Doctor Strange” is the latest film in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 3’s goal””over the course of four years and nine films””is to introduce audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites.
