Netflix’s Marvel Shows Can’t Appear On Disney+ For Two Years

Marvel's The Defenders

The wave of Marvel shows being canceled by Netflix was alarming but not surprising, especially since Disney is launching their own streaming service, Disney+, in 2019.

Most believed that Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and presumably The Punisher and Jessica Jones would just migrate over to their new home. Which makes sense. They would join the Scarlet Witch, Loki, Winter Soldier, and Falcon shows that are being launched. However, there is a clause that prevents these shows from appearing on Disney+ until 2020. More on the report, below.

Variety says the original four Marvel shows includes a clause that prevents the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation. That means the canceled Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will not be able to appear on Disney+ at least until 2020.

Additionally, chances of those title characters reappearing on another Defenders miniseries is pretty slim. To make matters worse, Disney could not move forward with Jessica Jones in the mix because the third season of her show is set to be released sometime in 2019, which means she wouldn’t be allowed to appear until 2021 if that show is canceled after the next season arrives. Same goes for The Punisher, which has a second season arriving in January of next year.

Furthermore, any plans for a second Defenders miniseries looked like they were scrapped after Disney announced they would launch their own streaming service in 2017. This streaming service means that the studio will be able to stream any and all Disney-owned IPs.

While this is sad news for fans of any or all four shows, there is still a chance that they could reappear. But given the two-year hold-out, it seems very unlikely. However, Marvel fans can rest easy knowing that Disney+ won’t have a Marvel void, as they will be releasing their own Marvel shows, some of which will have their original actors returning to reprise their roles.

Until then, we will just have to wait – and hope – that Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones can make a return with everyone involved coming back for more gritty comic book action in Hell’s Kitchen. Of course, we will keep you posted as soon as more developments come in.
