SDCC 2014: The Giver panel

Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly introduced the panel for The Giver, on Wednesday’s San Diego Comic Con panel in Hall H. The book that the film is based on, Lois Lowry‘s groundbreaking 1993 novel was arguably the prototype for the recent trend of Young Adult dystopian sci-fi that includes book series like The Hunger Games and Divergent.

Director Philip Noyce introduced, via a pre-recorded video message, footage from the film which gave a great overview of the false utopia of the world of The Giver and the discovery of its dark history.

Breznican then introduced author Lois Lowry, Brenton Thwaites, who plays Jonas, Jeff Bridges, who plays The Giver, Odeya Rush, who plays Fiona, and producer Nikki Silver.

Batman vs Superman

In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Batman and the upcoming film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC Entertainment has created a montage wall at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con featuring pictures old and new of the Dark Knight.

On said wall there now exists a brand new one photo revealed specifically for this event. It’s a profile shot of Ben Affleck from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the newest incarnation of the classic cowl we all know and love. The matte black of the mask and the unshaven chin give this Caped Crusader a very grisly look, reminiscent of some of Frank Miller’s darker renderings. Looking a bit worn around the edges, I’m beginning to think Affleck might do well in his role. Time will tell. No doubt there will be more movie news as SDCC 2014 continues. But until then, check this new photo out here below.

SDCC 2014: Penguins Dreamworks Panel

Thursday’s San Diego Comic-Con kicked off with a presentation by DreamWorks Animation in the convention center’s hallowed Hall H.

Ferguson opened with a joke about how SDCC is the weekend all domestic cats dread as their owners dress up in weird costumes and leave them alone for the weekend. He also mentioned that he’s moderating the panel because he’s “frightened of Jeffrey Katzenberg” and of course due to his appearances in the How to Train Your Dragon films. He then introduced a trailer for the upcoming film Home.

First was the panel for Home with director Tim Johnson, and voice actor Jim Parsons (from The Big Bang Theory). Johnson mentioned that the film is still six months away from finishing and that he first began the project two and a half years ago upon reading the book the film’s based on, The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex

Guillermo del Toro at the Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot Oculus VR experience

San Diego Comic-Con attendees were fully immersed in the interactive world of Guillermo del Toro at Legendary Pictures booth on Wednesday night. Hot off last month’s announcement of the official release date for Pacific Rim 2 (and the news of a Pacific Rim animated series), Legendary and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro have been working with tech developer Oculus VR on a first-person experience that allows fans to step into the cockpit one of the film’s Jaegers and engage in Kaiju battle.

I previewed a sneak peek of this experience myself on one of Legendary’s custom-built simulator rigs, as the Oculus Rift goggles were placed over my eyes and headphones over my ears. My field of vision filled with the interior of the cockpit of the Gipsy Danger as my copilot signaled me to prepare for neural interface. A quick mind warp and we were soon underwater, face-to-face with the Category III Kaiju known as Knifehead. Plasma cannon blasts were ineffective as Knifey soon struck the Jaeger, disabling one of its arms. A couple more strikes and soon Knifehead’s knife head was breaching the cockpit and directly in my face, bringing the simulation to an end.
