Sony's PlayStation Now

Sony has made a massive announcement. We’ve expected some sort of video game streaming option to allow fans to play older games (instead of making their latest console, the PlayStation 4, backwards compatible) for some time now after the announcement that they had acquire streaming service Gaikai. Now the company has made things official, announcing PlayStation Now.

Details will surely be coming as time goes on, but for right now, here’s what we do know: they’re aiming very high. Basically, PS Now will offer gamers the ability to play previous generation PlayStation titles—PlayStation, PS2, and PS3—on not just their consoles, but on various platforms. In fact, you’ll eventually even have the option of using the service to play full PlayStation titles on non-Sony devices, such as your smartphone or tablet. Yikes.

Gamer Cave

So you’ve managed to convince the woman of the house that a man cave is one of the essential rooms, only behind the kitchen and the bathroom. She claims the concept is almost as immature as the “No Girls Allowed” sign on your tree house from your elementary school days. I’m happily not one of those women. In fact, I’ll probably help you hang the beer signs!

In addition, I understand. This room is more than just a room. It’s a place where your geekiness can be expressed, where you and your buddies can relax (and drink), and where you can get your gaming on.

For the ultimate “gamer cave,” make sure you have these five essential items…

PSN Download
Rating: E
Developer: XPEC Entertainment
Publisher: Playstation Network
Release Date: July 23, 2013

Fun for the whole family. That’s what I saw when I first downloaded Do Not Fall last week. It’s rated E for Everyone so I went in expecting a pretty mild time. Not the hair-pulling, controller-throwing fit that I now associate with the game. No, seriously. It makes Candy Crush seem like a relaxing walk on the beach.

You start the game in a very basic, cartoon-ish screen that makes you think about kittens, flowers and unicorns. It seems like this will be a great way to unwind after getting worked up on whichever Call Of Duty you happen to be playing this week. Everything is easy to understand, controls are quite simple at the beginning…basically just running and jumping. The goal on this platformer is to collect ingredients to make drinks (you are trapped in a vending machine, more on that later), all the while avoiding a misstep and falling off the walkways. A little twist here: the floors disappear after you walk on them. Well, more of a slow fade away, though they do reappear a few seconds later. This is all well and good on the first level. Easy peasy.

Skyrim Dragonborn Image

Whatever the problems were that kept PlayStation 3 users from getting their hands on the DLC content released for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it’s clear that they weren’t minor. Months have passed since Xbox 360 users were able to get the game’s add-ons, and there was even a time when it appeared PS3 users might NEVER get to play.

But fear not, Sony fans. Bethesda Softworks has finally unraveled the tricky ball of issues that were causing the delay, and official release dates for the DLC on PS3 have been announced…along with a special offer as a thank you for your patience.

This week, Andy, Devindra, Chris, and Techmeme’s Lidija Davis break down this coming year’s latest videogame announcements from the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Later, we discuss last week’s All Things D conference, which was “haunted by the man who isn’t here.”

But first, this week’s headlines… LinkedIn suffers a massive security breach as 6.4 million passwords get leaked, Google sneaks the first video from Project Glass, Facebook Camera launches, Facebook plans to allow under 13-year-olds into their service, Apple to bring Siri to the iPad, and Airtime launches.
