Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII
Xbox One l PS4 l PC
DEVELOPER: Sledgehammer Games
PUBLISHER: Activision
RELEASE DATE: November 3, 2017

I haven’t reviewed a Call of Duty game since Black Ops II back in 2012. Hell, I haven’t even played a Call of Duty game since then. Mainly because the series kept venturing further and further into high-tech futuristic settings.

But for the latest game in the series, Call of Duty: WWII, the franchise returns to its roots. So when Activision offered a chance to review the game, I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to revisit the franchise as it revisited World War II.

Blu-ray Review: Dawn of the Dead (Collector's Edition)

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Blu-ray (Collector’s Edition)
Director: Zack Snyder
Screenwriter: James Gunn
Cast: Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, Lindy Booth, Matt Frewer, Tom Savini, Ken Foree

Rated R/ Not Rated | 101 / 110 Minutes
Release Date: October 24, 2017

Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and written by James Gunn (Slither, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series), 2004’s Dawn of the Dead is a remake of George A. Romero’s 1978 film of the same name. Arguably Snyder’s best film, and one of the better horror remakes of the past 20 years, the 2004 movie honors the original while offering a fresh, innovative take on the zombie subgenre.

A mysterious virus is turning people into flesh-eating zombies. Unlike Romero’s slow but relentless living dead, Snyder and Gunn pull from Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later playbook and apply the rabies-like symptoms of the 2002 film’s “Rage Virus” to their reanimated corpses, creating a horde of aggressive, fast-moving zombies that can run, jump, and climb. Essentially, the zombies of the new millennium are CrossFit enthusiasts on bath salts.

“In every neighborhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid…”

Written and directed by Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream), 1991’s The People Under The Stairs stars Everett McGill and Wendy Robie (Twin Peaks) as bible-thumping psychos who live in a house of unspeakable horrors. Brandon Adams (The Mighty Ducks) stars as Poindexter “Fool” Williams, a streetwise kid from a Los Angeles ghetto. With his family facing eviction, Fool agrees to assist Leroy (Ving Rhames) and his associate Spenser (Jeremy Roberts) in breaking into their landlord’s home in search of riches.

Things take a sinister turn when the robbers find themselves trapped inside a suburban fortress, held captive by the masochistic doppelgängers of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Robie and McGill, known only as “Mommy” and “Daddy,” are a pair of fundamentalist maniacs who have imprisoned their daughter Alice (A.J. Langer) for her entire life. Their darkest secret, however, lurks within the homestead’s walls… and under the stairs.

“Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny and he has made you his mission.”

Directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise, 1996’s Mission: Impossible was a critical and commercial success. Based on the 1960s CBS television series, the adaptation became the third highest-grossing film of that year, bested only by Twister and Independence Day.

Five movies and two decades later, the Mission: Impossible franchise shows no signs of slowing. The latest installment, Christopher McQuarrie‘s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is an action-packed spy thriller that’s bolder than Bond and more fun than Furious 7.
