X-Men: Days of Future Past is the X-Men movie I’ve dreamed of since my youth, back in the day when I mowed lawns during the dog days of summer to save up enough money to buy the latest X-comics off the shaky wire racks at my neighborhood 7-11. Those were the days when the comics were written by the great Chris Claremont and drawn by his gifted artistic equal Jim Lee and Future Past is the closest we’ve come yet to having a motion picture that brings those bold emotions, visuals, and outrageous “only in the funny books” style of four-color storytelling to explosive life.

As the late, great Mickey Newbury once sung, the future’s not what it used to be. The world has long been ravaged by a war between an alliance of mutants and sympathetic humans and the relentless robotic mutant hunters the Sentinels. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his X-Men are now the last remnants of the resistance and every day their numbers get lower. Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) and her ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time has helped give them a slim advantage in the ongoing battle and that power must now be used to send someone back to the point in history when the war became unavoidable: the assassination of Sentinel creator Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) at the hands of Xavier’s former friend and surrogate sister Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in 1973.

Deadpool

Studios are being quick to build a universe around their franchise heroes. Marvel has already established themselves as pioneers of sorts to building a superhero franchise universe, while others like Sony and Warner Bros. have yet to prove themselves with their own universes. Fox though may have the next best thing with their X-Men universe, which is about to get a little bigger now that Deadpool is officially confirmed.

That’s right, Deadpool will be a part of the X-Men film franchise. Shortly after it was announced that the character would be getting his own film, some of his fans were confused as to whether or not he will be a part of the X-Men universe. He was formally introduced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And while that may not have been the best film to introduce the character, Ryan Reynolds was probably one of the best things about the film. There was some speculation at first that Deadpool might be a reboot.

But now X-Men: Apocalypse screenwriter Simon Kinberg confirms that Deadpool is in fact a part of the X-Men film universe. Hit the jump for more.

X-Men Days of Future Past Mystique Image

The first two films of the X-Men: First Class trilogy centered on the early days of Professor X and Magneto’s relationship. The bond between the two can be described as strange since they seem like they are friends but their opposing views put them on opposite corners of the war between humans and mutants. But there is one relationship that the prequels seem to have forgotten about: the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicolas Hoult).

Now, Days Of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg says X-Men: Apocalypse will focus on that relationship once more, and adds that Apocalypse will close out the First Class trilogy. Hit the jump to learn more.

X-Men Apocalypse Header Image

While the next movie in the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse, isn’t scheduled to begin filming until sometime next year, the viral marketing for the movie is already underway.

A video titled “Homo Sapiens Superior” has been released, which begins with some natural disaster type events (including that Siberian sinkhole mystery from a couple of months back you may have read about), and then talks about the evolution of humans to the next level, and what that means for us current-level humans.

You can check it out below.

Apocalypse

X-Men: Days of Future Past may not have been the massive box office hit that Fox was hoping to have, a near 60% drop in box office revenue in its second week hurt the film’s numbers, but the hugely positive response was enough to give studio heads the confidence to move forward with its sequel X-Men: Apocalypse.

Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg have been hard at work trying to crack the script, and it looks like they have finally done it, as it has been confirmed that filming will begin next year in Canada.
