Alfre Woodard

As Daredevil continues production of Season 2, and AKA Jessica Jones gets ready for a Fall release on Netflix, Marvel is preparing for its next interconnecting series on the streaming site. The Luke Cage character will already be making his debut midway through the Jessica Jones debut season, which will eventually lead up to his own series, Luke Cage. Mike Colter stars as the titular character, and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker is currently assembling the rest of the cast. Now we know who will be the villain of the Luke Cage series.

A new report says that Alfre Woodard will now join the cast as one of the villains.

Deadline reports that the four-time Emmy Award winner will play “Minetta, a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life.”

Sounds a bit familiar, right? Well, that’s because the casting has Woodard listed as Minetta, but the site says that she will actually play the role of Black Mariah. Think of Minetta as the Kingpin of the Luke Cage series. In the comics, Black Mariah runs a gang called the Rat Pack. Their primary source of criminal activity would be using a stolen ambulance to pick up the bodies of the recently deceased, and then stealing whatever valuables they had on their person. In the comics, she was also a nemesis to Iron Fist, a character who is still yet to be cast.

Black Mariah would eventually move from stealing dead bodies to drug dealing. She has no superpowers, but she can use her extreme weight to hit with respectable force. Some of her weapons included sewing needles tipped with poison, and a handgun. The character isn’t exactly a household name when it comes to Marvel Comics, so it should be interesting to see what she does to establish herself in the MCU as a major villain.

Cage will play a wrongly accused man who, granted super-strength by a sabotaged experiment, escapes prison to become a superhero for hire.

Woodard’s recent credits include the short-lived NBC drama State of Affairs, and TNT’s hit show The Last Ship. She can be seen in the upcoming Mississippi Grind with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelson.

Netflix will release all 13 episodes of Luke Cage some time in 2016.
