Netflix has announced that they have acquired a movie titled Red Notice, which comes from Dwayne Johnson and Rawson Marshall Thurber. The pair has worked together twice in recent years on Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. Johnson stars and produces the feature, while Thurber writes, directs, and produces.
Also set to star is Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. The movie is described as a “globetrotting action-thriller” in which Johnson plays an agent who has been tasked with pursuing the world’s most wanted art thief.
Of the announcement, Johnson said:
“With Red Notice, our goal at Seven Bucks Productions was to break down traditional barriers and create a true global event for the audience. Netflix has illustrated that they are the perfect partners to accomplish this goal. I admire the ambition of Netflix to become one of the biggest movie studios in the world. Their original content generates critical acclaim and invites full collaboration on every level of production. Their unbridled enthusiasm for Red Notice is equally matched by their commitment to entertaining audiences on an international scale. As the landscape of movies, distribution and audience consumption continues to evolve, our Seven Bucks focus is to continue to find the best platform and partners to thrive in this ever changing environment. Director/writer Rawson Thurber has delivered a dynamic script that me and my co-stars and partners-in-heist, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, can’t wait to shoot. The fun we’re gonna have making Red Notice, but more importantly – the fun the worldwide audience will have watching it in 190+ countries – all at the same moment.”
Netflix Film head Scott Stuber had this to say:
“Rawson wrote a spectacular globetrotting action-adventure film. We can’t wait to bring this story and this Dream Team of movie stars, Dwayne, Ryan and Gal, to audiences around the world.”
Finally, Thurber had this to say:
“I’m beyond thrilled to be making Red Notice with Scott Stuber and Netflix “” a company that believes in filmmakers and big ideas for a global audience.”
Also producing with Johnson for Seven Bucks Productions is Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, while Beau Flynn produces for FlynnPictureCo. Scott Sheldon executive produces.
Red Notice was previously going to be released by Universal, but they decided to not move forward with it and allowed it to be shopped to other potential homes. According to Variety, the interest was competitive with studios like Paramount also bidding to acquire the project before Netflix won the rights.
Variety also reports that the movie will be a big one with huge paydays for its stars. They report that it could cost $160 to $200 million when all is said and done, and that Gadot and Reynolds will be making around $20 million each with Johnson making millions more due to his also being one of the primary producers.
No release window for Red Notice has been announced yet, but it is scheduled to begin filming in January 2020 in planned filming locations including Rome, Germany, Spain, Russia, France, and Indonesia.
