‘The Orville’: Seth MacFarlane Talks ‘Star Trek’ Comparison; Fox Not Worried About Being Sued

The Orville

When watching the trailer for The Orville, the upcoming sci-fi dramedy from Family Guy creator and Ted director Seth MacFarlane, it’s impossible to not immediately think of Star Trek (and also Galaxy Quest). Hell, even Orville executive producer Brannon Braga wrote and produced Star Trek series The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise (which he is credited as the creator of), and was a writer on movies Generations and First Contact.

For the 2017 Television Critics Association summer press tour, MacFarlane was asked about the comparison to Trek. Additionally, Fox was asked if they were worried about being sued over the show, especially with CBS having a brand new Trek series making its debut around the same time.

See what they both had to say below.

Blu-ray Review: Teen Wolf Too (Collector’s Edition)

Blu-ray Review: Teen Wolf Too (Collector's Edition)

Teen Wolf Too
Blu-ray (Collector’s Edition)
Director: Christopher Leitch
Screenwriter: Tim Kring
Cast: Jason Bateman, Kim Darby, John Astin, Paul Sand, James Hampton, Mark Holton, Estee Chandler, Stuart Fratkin
Distributor: Scream Factory
Rated PG | 94 Minutes
Release Date: August 8, 2017

1987 brought with it some of my favorite films, including Predator, RoboCop, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Hellraiser, Evil Dead II, and The Monster Squad, just to name a few. ’87 also gave us some of the worst sequels ever, like Jaws: The Revenge, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, and Teen Wolf Too, now available on Blu-ray from Scream Factory, known for delivering definitive releases of cult classics and forgotten genre films.

Directed by Christopher Leitch (writer of Universal Solider, director of She Fought Alone), Teen Wolf Too is a carbon-copy of Rod Daniel’s 1985 film, minus the charm. I have to assume that this movie was conceived as a direct sequel to the original, with Scott becoming a certified “party animal,” livin’ it up at college on a basketball scholarship. After Fox, who had become a big star after Back to the Future, dropped out, rewrites created a new character that could serve as a stand-in for Scott. Enter Jason Bateman (Zootopia, Horrible Bosses), brother of Fox’s Family Ties co-star, Justine Bateman, who stars as Todd Howard, Scott’s cousin.

Walt Disney Studios logo

Disney has a lot of properties. A lot of properties. In addition to its live-action and animation library, they also own Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. So all of those films would appear on Netflix just a few weeks after they’ve been released on Blu-ray and DVD.

But it appears that streaming Disney movies on Netflix will come to an end in 2019. The studio has announced that it will be ending its deal with Netflix, and instead will be launching its own streaming service. More on the story below.

Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s initial broadcast run ended in August 1999, when The Sci-Fi Channel canceled the beloved series. That wasn’t the end of movie-riffing, however. In 2007, five of the original cast/writers of MST3KJoel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, J. In this series, scientists have discovered a tear in the universe’s “electron scaffolding” and all digital media is at risk.
