By Kevin David Anderson As a fan and writer of horror, I tend to look for and find the horror in everything. From romantic comedies to presidential debates, I can somehow see the terror, the dread, and the worse case scenario in all stories, real or imagined. But when it comes to my favorite science fiction franchise, Star Trek, the search for horror, both dark and scary, is never difficult. Not the dystopian horror of 1984 or The Hunger Games, but good old fashion B-movie creature feature Halloween horror; vampires, zombies, shape shifters, body snatchers, and even serial killers can all be found in Star Trek. So when you go to select some Halloween entertainment on this Hallows’ Eve, forget Freddy. That nightmare is over. Jason and Michael, give them a rest this year. This Halloween after the trick or treating is done, and the orange glow of jack-o-lanterns have been extinguished, settle in on the couch, dim the lights, and watch Star Trek. | Make Your Own ‘Evil Dead’ Necronomicon This Halloween (Video)
With Halloween later this week, which also brings with it the arrival of Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz, it’s the perfect time to make yourself a cool prop. Thankfully the YouTube series DIY Prop Shop has you covered, offering tips on how you can make your very own “Book of the Dead,” the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis seen in the Evil Dead movies. The prop seems fairly easy to make, especially if you’ve got some arts and crafts and/or cosplaying skills, and should only cost you around $18 to $33 give or take depending on the materials you’re able to get for it. Fans of IDW Publishing’s Locke & Key have had to suffer through a lot of starts and stops when it comes to adapting the comic series into another medium. | ‘Saw,’ ‘Piranha 3DD’ Scribes Resurrecting Michael Myers In ‘Halloween Returns’
Remember back in February when it was announced that the never-ending Halloween franchise was preparing to spawn yet another installment of the kill crazy adventures of everyone’s favorite silent, slaughtering wraith Michael Myers? The word they were using this time was “recalibration,” because “reboot” had officially become so last decade. It’s still happening, and whether or not that’s a good thing depends entirely on you. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the screenwriters of four Saw sequels, all three Feast flicks, the 2009 horror sleeper hit The Collector and its 2012 follow-up The Collection, and Piranha 3DD, are hard at work on the motion picture that is now being referred to publicly as Halloween Returns. Dunstan, who directed The Collector and The Collection, is also currently on board to direct.
