The Sixth Gun

We reported a while ago that Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse was planning to bring the Oni Press comic book series The Sixth Gun to TV, and now we can report that, according to Deadline, NBC has officially ordered a pilot for the series. This is a good next step for the series which follows the adventures of Drake Sinclair and Becky Montcrief as they travel the wild west, trying to keep six supernatural pistols out of the hands of those who would use the guns to end the world.

The next step for the series will be assembling the cast and crew and getting the pilot on film. The Sixth Gun will be another in a growing number of comic properties coming to television. The pilot for the Marvel comics S.H.E.I.L.D. show for ABC is filming now. We’re still waiting to see what the status is on FX’s Powers show (based on the Image comic from Brian Bendis and Mike Oeming) which has gone through a number of issues, but still seems to be very much alive. There’s also the rumored Chew show (based on another Image comic by John Layman and Rob Guillory) set to air on Showtime.

Icon Sale

Icon, the creator-owned subsidiary of publisher Marvel Comics, has possibly one of the best stables of creators and comic book titles in their arsenal, and care of Comixology, you can catch up on titles like Criminal, Powers, Casanova, and more with a cool 20 percent off sale.

Yes, that’s right! You’ve seen the praise for Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ creator-owned work on this site before, and that’s with good reason, as Criminal and Incognito are two of the most innovative works in their fields. Both comics completely suck you in to their gritty, crime-ridden world setting and tell a story that is simply unforgettable. I even suggested that you catch up on Criminal on this past week’s GoD List, so if you for some reason weren’t listening to me, here’s your perfect opportunity. There’s not a single issue of Criminal or Incognito for over the price of $1.50. What are you waiting for?

Powers

The last few days have seen a flurry of activity surrounding the pilot for FX’s upcoming series Powers, based on the comic book by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. Three of the main cast members were announced in the last week by a variety of sources.

Jason Patric (Lost Boys, Speed 2) has been cast as lead character Detective Christian Walker. Joining him will be Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher, Dinner for Schmucks) as Walker’s new partner, Deena Pilgrim. Finally, it was announced yesterday that Carly Foulkes (the girl from those T-Mobile commercials) has been cast as Retro Girl, one of the superheroes in the Powers universe, and also the victim in the series’ first investigation.

The GoD List: Comics for May 18, 2011

Each week, MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of May 18, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

MK2FAC3

Well, it’s an interesting week for me comics wise, I have a lot of collections that I want to tell you about, and about three single issues, all of which are first issues and each is from a miniseries! And, of course… Batman is represented in my section. Let’s kick it off with…

DrumsDrums #1 (Image Comics – $2.99): I seriously know nothing about this book, but it just looks really cool and supernatural. Based on its solicitation, I could say that the book centers around Santeria, more commonly know as “voodoo,” and raising of the dead, and that’s honestly good enough for me, but it also says that it takes place to the sound of drums. Now, I don’t know how they’re going to pull that off, but it’s got my attention. Pick this up if you want to try something new and different.

Last Mortal #1 (Image Comics – $3.99): Continuing the string of “I don’t what the F%$* this is, but it looks cool” is Last Mortal, which appears to be one of those great minis where it’s a super depressing, yet uplifting tale of real life, and I’m sure that this will get a lot of praise by the end of the year, so now’s not the time to sleep on this title.

‘Powers’ Gets The Green Light At FX

Powers

FX is one of those networks that are easy to forget about, but pay attention they are doing some interesting stuff over there. Currently the network has a couple of fantastic shows, Justified and Sons of Anarchy, and one odd but entertaining animated series, Archer. Now it seems that they are getting into the superhero game and they may actually be getting some talented folks behind the camera. Sure that sounds snarky but when you look at shows like The Cape and you read everything that’s happening with the upcoming Wonder Woman series, it’s easy to get a little jaded when it comes to “superhero” shows or adaptations of comics to TV.

FX has greenlit a pilot for an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis‘ amazing comic book series called Powers. FX Senior Vice President of Public Relations John Soldberg made the official announcement on Twitter.
