Comics of Doom is back for another weekly installment of Geeks of Doom’s Official Comics Podcast. With you this week are Hunter Camp, Chris McDavid, and Willie Gillis to talk to you about all the latest and greatest in the world of comics. There were some interesting bits of news, and as always each host has picked their favorite comics from the week, including but not limited to Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Heart, Fear Agent, Last of The Greats, and many more! But there can be only one Doom of the Week. And the comic that stood out this week was none other than Nick Spencer and Christian Ward’s Infinite Vacation #3.

It’s that time of year again, boys and girls! The temperature has dropped, the leaves have turned from green to varying shades of orange and red; children dress in the guise of their favorite characters, and the flickering of candles show the yellow grins of the jack-o-lanterns adorning the porches of your neighborhood. It’s Halloween, folks, and while there’s plenty of people out there that like cute, plastic pumpkins on their doors, we here at Geeks of Doom like our Halloweens a little more horrifying. So, it’s with this, Halloweekend, that I will be bringing to you a series of horror-themed features that showcase the wicked side of geek entertainment.

In the first installment of what I like to call Halloweekend of Doom, I’m going to explore 13 comic books that should get you in the mood for the greatest time of year. The list is in no particular order, and this isn’t intended to be the be all end all of horror comics, but these comics are great to read during Halloween. I’ll cover some that can be considered family friendly, but the majority of these are strictly dark and for mature audiences.

DC Comics announced eight more new titles on Tuesday showcasing the darker side of their publishing line. The titles that were announced were a strange assortment of titles that focused on demons, former Vertigo characters, magicians, vampires, and monsters. And as weird as the concept of introducing these characters with ongoing titles is, the creative teams attached to these projects are some of the best names from up-and-comers in the comic books industry. Names like Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire, Sami Basri, and Joshua Hale Fialkov are only the tip of the iceberg, and if that doesn’t have you excited about these books, then you should probably read some of their work. Also, I’m a big fan of supernatural and crazy comics, so it’s almost like DC plan these announcements just for me. Continuing my ongoing coverage of the DC Relaunch, I’ll list each one of the titles announced with running commentary for each, so let’s get to it!

The Return of Swamp Thing, the 1989 Jim Wynorski-direct film starring Heather Locklear and Dick Durock, is now online to watch for FREE for residents of the United States.

The Return of Swamp Thing, which also stars Louis Jourdan and Sarah Douglas, is based on the DC/Vertigo comic book series Swamp Thing and is the sequel to Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing film.

Make no mistake, this movie is pure 80s cheesy goodness, but one thing it succeeds in is making you sympathetic to the Swamp Thing (Durock), a scientist who was transformed into a creature after a horrible lab experiment. And for the typical ’80s man-in-monster-suit, I think the Swamp Thing looks pretty good (the same can’t be said about the other fail experiment victims also roaming the swamps).
