Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy

Now that 2014 has come to a close, it’s time to look back on the films that were released during the year, so here below is a list of my favorite movies of 2014. Now, I’m not saying these are the “best” movies of the year, just that these are my favorites. I see a lot of movies each year, but admittedly most of these are viewed on home video. Most of the ones that I selected as my favorites of 2014 were films that I had been anticipating and that I did make a point to watch in the theater, sometimes even more than once. Since many of my selections are already out now on home video, I’ve gotten to watch them several times. And, for someone like me, if I want to repeatedly watch a movie, then that’s a likely candidate to make it to the top of my list of favorites for the year.

With that, here’s a list of my Favorite Movies of 2014.

X-Men: Days of Future Past Movie Review

With the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past on Blu-ray and DVD this week, it was almost guaranteed that it would draw the attention of the crew at Screen Junkies for their ongoing hilarious Honest Trailers series. Sure enough, the X-Men movie gets skewered like Wolvie skewers the bad guys (for the seventh freaking time in the X-Men universe…seriously).

The Honest Trailer also points out the fact that Days of Future Past pretty much plays out like the plot of a certain Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle from the “future past” (Terminator 2). And while it might seem a little heavy-handed they did give props to what really stole the entire film, which was Quicksilver’s “Time in a Bottle” scene.

Check out the hilarity below.

Sin City A Dame To Kill For Mickey Rourke as Marv

Welcome to another shiny new edition of The Digital Wire! Despite that exuberant fanfare, I am sad to announce that this week has been mighty slim in the realm of Blu-ray and DVD release news and the titles we have to report on won’t get much interest as they are all part of tired franchises, but one of the purposes of this feature is to give such titles the space they deserve. Besides, you may be interested in one or more of them.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the X-Men movie I’ve dreamed of since my youth, back in the day when I mowed lawns during the dog days of summer to save up enough money to buy the latest X-comics off the shaky wire racks at my neighborhood 7-11. Those were the days when the comics were written by the great Chris Claremont and drawn by his gifted artistic equal Jim Lee and Future Past is the closest we’ve come yet to having a motion picture that brings those bold emotions, visuals, and outrageous “only in the funny books” style of four-color storytelling to explosive life.

As the late, great Mickey Newbury once sung, the future’s not what it used to be. The world has long been ravaged by a war between an alliance of mutants and sympathetic humans and the relentless robotic mutant hunters the Sentinels. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his X-Men are now the last remnants of the resistance and every day their numbers get lower. Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) and her ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time has helped give them a slim advantage in the ongoing battle and that power must now be used to send someone back to the point in history when the war became unavoidable: the assassination of Sentinel creator Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) at the hands of Xavier’s former friend and surrogate sister Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in 1973.

X-Men Days of Future Past Mystique Image

The first two films of the X-Men: First Class trilogy centered on the early days of Professor X and Magneto’s relationship. The bond between the two can be described as strange since they seem like they are friends but their opposing views put them on opposite corners of the war between humans and mutants. But there is one relationship that the prequels seem to have forgotten about: the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicolas Hoult).

Now, Days Of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg says X-Men: Apocalypse will focus on that relationship once more, and adds that Apocalypse will close out the First Class trilogy. Hit the jump to learn more.
