Gail Simone To Take Over ‘Red Sonja’ For Dynamite This July

Red Sonja by Fiona Staples

How awesome is this? One of the premiere writers in comics, Gail Simone, who’s best known for her work on DC series such as Batgirl, Birds Of Prey, Secret Six, and Wonder Woman, will be writing an upcoming relaunched Red Sonja for Dynamite Entertainment beginning this July, the publisher announced on Friday.

This is huge for a variety of reasons. Primarily, Red Sonja is one of those comics that unjustifiably winds up thrown in the pile of other comics with scantly clad super heroines – ones who aren’t necessarily presented in a positive light for female readers, with art and writing that rarely has a strong female voice or vision behind them. With Simone being one of the most outspoken and progressive voices in comics, however, a truly awesome, kick-ass, brutal lead lady will surely be within the pages of Red Sonja, especially without the restrictions of a major corporation-backed publisher.

Night of the Owls by Greg Capullo

Following the lead in Scott Snyder’s current run on Batman, DC Comics has posted a graphic containing all of the titles that will be participating in the Batman crossover event Night of the Owls.

Night of the Owls started this week with a prelude in Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows’ Nightwing #8 which kickstarted the first issue in the crossover event, Batman #8 by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. The concept of the mini-event is that Gotham City has a sordid past that even Bruce Wayne was unaware of. The Court of Owls, an evil group of assassins, has been controlling the fate of Gotham the entire time. There’s much more to the story including Dick Grayson’s lineage and an all out assault against the Wayne family and other leaders of Gotham City. It’s a war of Bats vs. Owls when most of the Bat-family is called upon to participate.

You Should Be Reading: Secret Six

Secret Six

One of the most original titles that DC Comics has put out in recent years is Secret Six.

The group consists of six mercenaries who were once villains in the Batman universe, including Catman, Deadshot, Ragdoll, Scandal Savage, Bane, and Janette.

The series has been out for 30 issues now but I have just recently gotten into it. In the first trade, Secret Six: Unhinged, the team embarks on a mission to break a meta-human out of Alcatraz and take her back to Gotham city. She has in her possession a card which allows a person who dies to get out of Hell. The story is a wild and wacky and violent road trip from San Francisco to Vegas to the streets of Gotham, and at one point they even ride in an ice cream truck. I don’t want to go further into the story and spoil it, but let’s just say it’s well worth the read.
