Guest NCBD Picks by Blake Northcott

Yes, I admit it: one of the best comics I’ve read this year is about magical orgasms. This week, Sex Criminals #3 (Image Comics – $3.50), written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky, will be the first book I tear into the moment I get home from collecting my stash.

You’ve Seen ‘Iron Man 3,’ Now Here’s Some Comics To Read

Iron Man

So, you’ve seen Iron Man 3, and now you’re all excited to read some of the old shell head’s adventures in comic book form. Well, have I got a list for you!

Here’s a brief selection of some of the stories that inspired the movie, and some that’ll get you caught up with where the character is these days in the Marvel Universe.

Iron Man: Extremis – This is at least part of the basis for the plot of Iron Man 3, but like a lot of the Marvel movies, Iron Man 3 is only loosely based on this story (very loosely). Published in 2005 and 2006, Extremis features Tony Stark taking on a group of terrorists armed with some scary new technology that forces Iron Man to get with the times and upgrade his armor. The series, written by Warren Ellis, features a lot of new ideas for Iron Man. It is very much a Warren Ellis comic, with a bunch of near-futuristic concepts come to life and used to tell an exciting adventure. This is one of the first comics to really push Iron Man to the forefront of the Marvel universe, plus it’s a decent story and works well on its own. This is one of the best Iron Man stories to give to people who’ve never read one before.

The Heroes Doc Banner

Guys, there’s a geek-tastic documentary in the works that could really use your support on Kickstarter! The Heroes Doc by Jere Thomas and Matthew Tyndall is the story of the 30th anniversary of the Heroes Convention, hosted by Shelton Drum, owner of the legendary comic book shop Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find.

The Heroes Doc tells the story of how the “Emerald City of the East” convention started in a hotel conference room and has grown to be one of the largest independent comic book conventions in the nation. The documentary tells the complete story of the man, the store, the convention, and all the people that make it possible.

Jere and Matt have been following the Heroes team since last August; learning the day-to-day operations, watching as they prepare for special events like Free Comic Book Day, and looking at all of the behind-the scenes-action as they get ready for this year’s convention.

Icon, the creator-owned subsidiary of publisher Marvel Comics, has possibly one of the best stables of creators and comic book titles in their arsenal, and care of Comixology, you can catch up on titles like Criminal, Powers, Casanova, and more with a cool 20 percent off sale.

Yes, that’s right! You’ve seen the praise for Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ creator-owned work on this site before, and that’s with good reason, as Criminal and Incognito are two of the most innovative works in their fields. Both comics completely suck you in to their gritty, crime-ridden world setting and tell a story that is simply unforgettable. I even suggested that you catch up on Criminal on this past week’s GoD List, so if you for some reason weren’t listening to me, here’s your perfect opportunity. There’s not a single issue of Criminal or Incognito for over the price of $1.50. What are you waiting for?

Avengers vs X-Men Banner

Avengers vs. X-Men may be one of Marvel’s most hyped Summer events ever. It does actually have all the elements to become something great: a killer creative team (Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, John Romita Jr., Adam Kubert, Olivier Copiel) and a mix of Marvel’s most popular heroes fighting each other HeroClix-style. Hopefully it’s not all just flash and there’s actually a great story behind all the punches and energy blasts.

GoD List Banner

Each and every week “William Wallace” MK2Fac3 and “Wallace William” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of December 7, 2011. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Two men enter. One man leaves. These are the rules of any cage match that does not feature more than two opponents. However, if the “fight to the death” stipulation is invoked, then the rules will be changed slightly into this: Two men enter. One man lives. The best cage matches tend to have what could be considered as a “David v. Goliath” element to them in which one opponent is much larger and threatening than the other, but the smaller of the two men posses the heart to face any and all opposition without hesitation. In these situations, it’s customary for the big man to be the likely winner, but everyone is cheering for the small guy. Now you may be asking yourself, what do the rules and excitement of violent cage matches have to do with this week’s comics? I have a simple reply my friends, absolutely nothing. Here are the comics that we’re looking forward to this week!

The Avengers vs. The X-Men

Pretty much every year, comic book publishers unleash a monthly event comic to boost excitement and sales in their comics. And this week Marvel Comics announced that event as The Avengers vs. The X-Men.

Now, I’m not quite sure how, but more on that later. Avengers Vs. X-Men will be a bi-weekly, six-month comic coming in at a total of 12 issues and features some of the biggest names in comics. Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, and Matt Fraction will all be on writing duties, while John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel, and Adam Kubert will be working on art.
