Valentine of Doom

Candy hearts, chocolates, heart-shaped cakes and pizzas, and an open bag of Doritos on the floor next to your bed, this could only mean one thing, it’s Tuesday! But it’s not just Tuesday, no sir or ma’am! It’s more than Tuesday! While it is in fact true that it’s Tuesday, it’s also Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day can mean a variety of things depending on the person. But whether you’re single, you really enjoy Valentine’s Day, or if you just feel like you’ve gotta buy your significant other something, we here at Geeks of Doom have put together a little list of comic books to get you through this day filled with love, chocolate, and corporate interest to make you spend money on an item to prove something that you should be proving every day! And isn’t that what it’s all about, love and stuff? Sure is! So, without further ado, here are five of my favorite romantic stories in comics in what I consider Comics’ Finest Love Stories. Admittedly, I don’t read a lot of love stories in comics, so this list may get really weird, really quick. Anyway, here it goes!

Steed And Mrs. Peel #1Steed And Mrs. Peel #1
Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Ian Gibson
Lettering by Ellie De Ville
Covers by Ian Gibson
Boom! Studios
Release Date: January 18, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

I’ve never seen an episode of The Avengers TV show which this comic is based on, and I’ve never been a huge Grant Morrison fan. So, why did I ask to review Steed And Mrs. Peel #1? For something different. Thankfully, although I was a little confused at times, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Nothing really needs to be said about writer Grant Morrison, so I’m not going to. As I stated before, I’m not at all familiar with The Avengers television series, but I really don’t think that it hurt my enjoyment of the book at all. Granted, there were a few things that I didn’t appreciate like, somebody who had been a fan of the TV show, but all in all, it’s a great mystery/spy story.

DC Relaunch: Six Comics Canceled and Replaced With ‘Second Wave’

relaunch bannerDC Comics announced on Thursday that they would be setting up the second wave of “New 52” releases while also canceling six ongoing comics that were released in the initial run of the DC Relaunch.

Resting in peace are six comics that were quite good and enjoyable or had a lot of potential to be great, so they will definitely be missed. Those comic books are Blackhawks – a war comic focusing on a group of militaristic mercenaries in the vein of G.I. Joe; Hawk and Dove – the only DC book written by the extremely talented Sterling Gates with art from Rob Liefeld (more on him in another article); Men of War – a war book that was one of my favorite comics of the relaunch that took a realistic approach to the military in a world full of superheroes; Mister Terrific – one of the very few DC comics with a person of color as the leading role. Also, the main character was highly intelligent and, interestingly enough in a comic, atheist. O.M.A.C. – this to me is a tragedy considering that it was a fan favorite even in the light of poor sales. Sure it’s bizarre and nutso, but it was a complete blast to read. And finally Static Shock – one of, if not the only book that could be considered “youthful” and “fun,” and also one of the few books starring a person of color. All of these titles will see their last issues in April.

Each and (almost) every week “Mr. Fifth Di-WTF is he talking about-mension” MK2Fac3 and “Mr. I’m Too Pretty For Formatting” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Happy New Year, lads and lasses! In just a short amount of days, I’ll be sailing the seven seas, but let’s catch up for a moment. How did you spend your New Year’s Eve and Day? Did you eat your good luck charms? Did you spend the holidays drunk and hungover? That’s neat. I spent mine laying in bed with an illness that can only be described as velociraptor-esque. But I can tell you one thing, I cracked the code of the fifth dimension. It’s simple, you see. Because the fifth dimension is what determines our very existence. It’s all based on words. Words define our lives because without language and words, we would not be able to communicate. Well, maybe we could through art? Who knows, I was running a fever and hallucinating. Either way, though, comics consist of both art and words, so it’s the perfect medium! You know what I’m saying? GoD List. Baller cakes.
