How Creative Committee Dissolution Will Change Marvel Studios

The Avengers Post-Credits Scene

This week marked big changes for Marvel Studios. Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter lost his power over the superhero studio that has grossed over $7 billion dollars in seven years, leaving Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to report to Disney Head Of Live-Action Movies Alan Horn. Perlmutter will retain oversight on Marvel Television, but the restructuring meant that Kevin Feige would have more control over budgets, casting, etc when it comes to everything Marvel Studios. It’s not clear what this could mean for the overall shared universe with the films being connected with TV. But I’ve heard that there isn’t much of a connection between the two parties at all. But that is besides the point.

Now it appears that the shake-up isn’t over yet, and this could be a big one. There are two reports coming out saying that Marvel’s Creative Committee – their version of the Pixar Brain Trust – will now dissolve. More on this story below.

Kevin Feige

While most would think that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is the top man who reports to Disney CEO Bob Iger, that really isn’t the case. He actually reports to Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, a reclusive executive who is known for micromanaging the superhero entertainment giant. However, Feige has expressed frustration at the working relationship. So after venting said frustration to Iger and Disney live-action head Alan Horn, the company did some corporate restructuring, which gives Perlmutter less control over Marvel Studios and more to Feige.

Doctor Strange

It will be exciting to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will progress after Phase II. With Guardians of the Galaxy taking us to galaxies unknown, and Ant-Man introducing us to the quantum realm, what sort of dimensions could we expect to see in Phase 3? Well, Doctor Strange will attempt to give us a look at what’s to come.

Marvel President Kevin Feige MC’d the Marvel panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, on Saturday and offered attendees a look at the film, which came in the form of concept art from Marvel’s art department. This is because director Scott Derrickson hasn’t shot anything yet, as filming is scheduled to begin this November. As he would explain, these concept art pieces aren’t revealed to the public this early during the pre-production process, and came straight from the vaults of the Marvel Art Department. As the photos started to be displayed, we clearly see that Doctor Strange will truly be Marvel’s Fantasia (as previously revealed).

More on what we saw at the D23 Expo here below.

Captain America: Civil War

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is currently the only Phase 3 film in production. With others expected to shoot later in the year, the film was the only one who was able to show some footage at the D23 Expo, in Anaheim, California on Saturday. Before any footage was shown, Kevin Feige revealed that the Russo Brothers are currently filming in Germany with one week of production left. Of course they couldn’t go into great detail about it, because who wants to hear Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans talk (both of whom were also present for the Marvel panel) about a film, when they can show footage for everyone to get excited about.

Check out our description of the footage below.

Spider-Man header

Spider-Man is coming home in a very big way. He won’t be doing any webslinging on his own until 2017, but he will make his Marvel Cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War. However, the problem with having a second reboot in nearly ten years, is the notion that they will have to repeat the same origins story all over again. Of course, that can get tiresome, and would probably turn audiences away from seeing the solo feature. However, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have confirmed that their script won’t have Peter Parker go through the same motions to become Spider-Man. In fact, the two reveal that their Spider-Man is an already established hero.
